Frount of the car's bell housing to enginblock connection. there are two of them and they cost alot so it's best to have a regular repair shop find and fix the problem as they'll be able to pick out the bad senser and save time and money in the long run. Make sure the shop you chose has done this work before and has the proper scanners and test equipment to work on a prblem of this kind.

Where would the af sensor be located on my 2004 nissan maxima

your maxima has 2 a/f ratio sensors. they are both screwed into the exhaust manifolds. bank 2 which is the front bank by radiator has sensor clearly visible right by the fans. bank 1 is a pain in the rear to replace, because of its location by the firewall. you will need to perform "self learn reset" procedure after replacing the a/f ratio sensor, or the code will come back on, even tho you don't have an issue with the sensor. reset procedure gets done with nissans consult scanner.

How do you remove the plug from an crankshaft position sensor on a 2004 nissan maxima

I just did this yesterday. from under the car. It's in between the exhaust piping and and the transmission. So kind of on the dirver side from under the car. You'll notice it because it's about the only wiring connected or run in that area. There is a metal cover plate that is secured by one bolt. Then the crankshaft position sensor is also just connected by a single bolt. The wiring harness is just cliped on with a pressure clip. It will take a little forceful wiggling to get it apart as you push on the clip of the wiring harness.

Hi, usually one of 2 sensors cause that. The camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor. Usually the latter. Does it have the no-start condition more when the motor is hot or has been running? Or is it just anytime cold or hot?
Crankshaft sensor is notorious for hot non starts and wont always leave a code. Reply with more info if you like. Does engine also run rough or lack power? Mike

Where is the crankshaft sensor located ?

The crankshaft position sensor (POS) is located on the oil pan facing the gear teeth (cogs) of the signal plate. It detects the fluctuation of the engine revolution.
After replacement, ECM reprogramming is required.
This vehicle may be subject to voluntary recall, CAMPAIGN I.D. # R0606, that involves the crankshaft position sensor:

Quote: Nissan has determined that on some 2003 - 2004 Altima and Sentra vehicles with the 2.5 liter engine the operation of the crank angle sensor is significantly affected by variations in temperature that occur due to the unique location of the sensor in the engine. Under certain driving conditions, these variations in temperature can be large enough to cause a brief interruption in the signal output from the sensor. If the interruption in the signal from the sensor is so brief that the Electronic Control Module (ECM) logic does not have time to diagnose the condition, the engine may stop running without warning while the vehicle is driven at low speed.
