How do I add transmission fluid to my 1992 Saturn SL2?

with the car parked on a level surface start the engine. Remove the transmission dipstick and wipe clean. Reinsert the dipstick and pull out again. The level should be somewhere between the cold and hot markings. If it is low that start by adding 1/2 quart through the same tube that the dipstick goes into. You may have to purchase a small funnel that will fit into the opening.

After adding the fluid wait a couple of minutes for the fluid to settle out of the tube. Recheck the level. If still low continue to add in 1/2 quart increments until the fluid shows up in the cold level area.

The engine should be running and in park the hole time your are doing this.

I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

99 saturn sl2 has lost reverse

Reverse & 2nd gear share the same clutch pack.Usually when reverse goes out you will get wierd shifting into 2nd or 3rd.Most likey the Input shaft retaining nut has come loose inside the first clutch housing. It can be accessed from the trans end cover but it will take some disassembly. The trans doesn't have to come out to correct this problem.I repaired many saturns with this problem. The only parts you will have to buy is an end cover gasket(paper gasket) & 41/2 qts Trans fluid.Decent mechanice could do this in about 2-3 hrs or less. The service engine light is probally on due to trouble codes from the trans controller most likey DTC P0723 No 2nd gear.hope this helps

1995 Saturn SL2 stalls

Very likely (again) a failed alternator.
I owned this exact same year and model (bought new) and during its 57,600 mile 'lifetime,' the alternator was replaced SIX (6) times, the auto tranny repaired at 29,000 (on my wallet), front discs ground once (warranty), replaced once (my wallet) and it finally died on starting by dropping a rod cap and dumping oil all over a parking lot.
Each time the alternator died, I had similar symptoms to yours and once the ABS locked up because of low voltage and I had to floor the gas to get the piece of junk out of a busy intersection and into a parking lot.
The alternator is too small for its rating (1200 watts and a theoretical efficiency of max 50%) so consequently runs very hot and does not get any cooling because of its mounting area.
It was my first American car in 37 years and the last one I will ever buy.
