Question about Plymouth Neon

2 Answers

I have a 97 Plymouth Neon 4 cyl SOHC. I recently bought it and it keeps overheating. I replaced the thermostat, temp coolant sensor, radiator cap, and flushed the radiator twice. I also took it to a shop and they did a pressure test and it passed. It doesn't smoke or anything but it's constantly overheating. What could the problem be?

Radiator could be plugged, head gaskets are common problems. The timing belt drives the water pump, These cars are bad news. Have your mechanic do a Block Check to check for combustion gases in the cooling system. If it fails that test, the head will need to come off. You can bet the other owner had it overheat....... a lot, he knows what it needs and sold it to you.

MAKE SURE COOLING FAN WORKING CHECK FUSE AND RELAY.SCAN CAR TO MAKE SURE THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR WORKING.IT CONTROLS FAN OPERATION.BESURE YOU ARE USING CORRECT COOLANT MIXTURE.YOU NEED 50 % ANTIFREEZE AND 50 % WATER. The coolant must operate under pressure to raise its boiling point (so it won't turn to steam.)

Replace the radiator cap with a new one.

1995 Dodge (Plymouth) Neon overheating issues

I guess the first thing would be to make sure you have all the air out and the radiator is full of coolant.
The second question would be why it overheated again.
As long as the system has air in it, the heater core will not get hot.
Keep in mind the water pump is driven by the timing belt, and both should have been replaced at 80,000 miles or less.

if car shuts off when hot outside, change thermostat and radiator pressure cap.-- heres more-car shuts off when tempurature of engine gets to normal. causes; low coolant, failing coolant temp. sensor, air in water pump. it takes 10-15 minutes to reach normal range. hope this helps! good-day!

My 2002 Buick Rendevous has a hot coolant

Install the new thermostat (make sure it is the right temp). This will allow for your coolant to stay long enough in the radiator to cool down.

If that does not fix it, check radiator cap, belt that turns the water pump and the water pump itself along with its pulley.

There is also the possibility that the coolant temperature sensor is giving off false readings, that the coolant system is clogged or your engine fan is not operating when it should be.

Electric cooling fans will work.

The fans are actuated by coolant temp in the radiator. It is possible to have overheated coolant in the radiator, causing the steam, and your engine not overheating...the temp sensor for your engine is reflecting the engine temp, not the temp of the coolant in the radiator. You problem could be a bad temp sensor at the radiator...not allowing the fans to come on. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful!
