Sounds like the dreaded cracked instrument cluster problem. Then, one possible no start condition, this will prevent the car from starting if this happens. You would have to get a replacement cluster unless you are good at soldering. I would also first try cleaning the battery terminals and the inside of the cables first and get them all cleaned up using a battery brush. The next thing believe or not when you try to start the car give the dashboard a good whack and see if it livens anything up, if so its the cluster.

I would start with taking the instrument cluster out and resoldering the connections. Soldering is really not that bad, just need a steady hand. I didn't add much solder, just tin the tip to help with the heat transfer and hold to the joint. It melts, remove heat, it hardens. Read this LINK for pics, removal instructions and fix.

And HERE for 1998 "dash removal" pics.

Hope this help.

Okay...I looked through 186 recalls and service bulletins and nothing related to what is going on with your vehicle. However, if any sort of maintenance was done where any of the plugs were disconnected and the proper steps for the 5 second interval was not followed, then the system associated with that component may have been corrupted and the diagnostic charts say replacement of the part...no further action can be taken for repair but part replacement only.

Okay...that is good to hear...even though it doesn't solve the problem.

Question....have you tried disconnecting the battery for 3 minutes or less? This may reset it. Please reply.

  • kevin butler May 12, 2010

yes I tried the battery disconnect, to no advail..when you first start the van the guages work fine.. or at least appear to.. with in a minute the drop to zero... does this van have a body control module that communicates with the instrument cluster?

Can you tell what scanner have you used ? Your vehicle could also be using OBD 1 rather than OBD 2. Since OBD2 started after 1997 there is a high possibility you are using the wrong scanner as the check engine light is giving you a warning here and it must be for a reason.Hope this helps.

snap on modis...it is scanning in obd 2 mode... i went ahead and disconnected several sensor to set codes and scanned and it did respond

  • heeman mohun May 11, 2010

This is where I think you are mistaken.Use an obd1 scanner and see if it reveals any code. Obd 2 readers cannot read obd 1 technology.

  • kevin butler May 11, 2010

shouldn't an obd2 compliant setup report codes.. even in generic obd2...i now used an autoscan scannner with same outcome...biggest prob is the instrument cluster not showing any info..when i scan and look at data temp shows to be correct but cluster shows zero

It sounds like the ignition switch is signaling to the dash (in error) upon startup. It may be the switch itself.

Speedo and tack lights dont work on 1998 v6 3.3 dodge caravan replace all fuses and lights instrument cluster looks ok ?

This is most likely in the cluster. It may have replacable bulbs in the back of it. If it does not, than it is a sealed system and the cluster needs to be replaced. Good news is you can put a used cluster in this van and you will not lose your miles.

Could be a bad cluster. If one is cable driven, and the other electric. You could have a bad speed sensor in the transmission which will make the speedo not work.

Chrysler 99' town&country idiot lights guages go on&off

This is a very common problem on 1998 dodge caravan, voyager, t and County. You have a cracked circuit board in your instrument cluster. It is a dealer item. You can remove your cluster and install the circuit board yourself to save money but after the install you will have to take the vehicle back to the dealer to have it calibrated before the tach and the speedometer will work.

Instrument panel gauges all stopped working while driving.

These vans are common for having cracked circuit boards in the Instrument cluster. You need to replace the circuit board. Try smacking the end of the dash and see if the gauges start working again.

2005 Dodge caravan dashboard indicator lights and dials went haywire

2005 Caravan I had the same problem with my van gauges bounceing, headlights not comeing on when the switch was turned on.I took a day and downloaded a wireing diagram from dodge and studyed it.GROUND PROBLEM dodge have several ground conections to the body then there is one MAIN BODY GROUND.This is most likely your problem it is easy for any back yard mechanic to fix. This main body ground is located under your battery box.You will have to remove the battery and then the battery box becarful of the battery sensor that is mounted in the bottom of the box. Also there is a hose that you will have to disconnect but dont try to remove it from the box remove it from above the box. After you get the battery and box out you will see a threaded stud with a black wire conected to it this will be rusted because of no antioxide grease applyed. You will have to remove the nut and wire connector clean both and the stud with wire brush or sandpaper.Put antioxide grease or if nothing else some vaseline to keep it from coroading again.put back together and see if this dosent fix your problem. It has been six weeks for me now.good luck.dont forget that neg battery terminal is the first one to disconect and the last to reconect.

The circuit board for the instrument cluster is bad.It can be replaced independently of the cluster and you can get one from the dealer for around 400 dollars or you can take chance and get a whole cluster from a salvage yard for around 20 dollars.
