99 GMC Sierra 5.3L sputtering and hesitating

My 99 GMC Sierra 5.3L has been sputtering right after start up. Idles fine, revs fine when in park but as soon as I shift to Drive and give it gas it'll sputter and eventually go. After a few minutes warm up it seems to be fine. Lately it has been hesitating and the transmission acts like it doesn't know what gear to be in. Any ideas?

I changed the TPS over the weekend and the problem is still there. Last night it actually stalled on me while driving. It was running fine and then started to act like it was running out of gas. Now when I start the engine, it will run for about 10 seconds and then putter out, giving it gas doesn't help. I am going to replace the fuel filter this evening and see if that helps.

I replaced the fuel filter and all the spark plugs. I am still getting a hesitation if I give the truck too much gas, if I just feather the accelerator it seems to do ok. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

It was the fuel pump. I replaced it and everything has been fine since.

Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

check for a faulty / blocked accelerator pump /circuit as this fits the lack of fuel squirt on acceleration description. Also check the timing of the ignition.

check for codes. If no codes are stored then maybe the idle air control valve is bad, or the air cleaner clamps are loose.. If the clamps were loose or a vacuum hose fell off you should have a code stored. If the IAC is bad it usually will not set a code.

I have a 99 gmc sierra with 5.3 it takes about 7 seconds to start

Needs a valve adjustment. I assume its EFI, eliminating the possibility of the carb.

Sputtering when accelerating

If it idles ok and only "sputters" under load it could be either an ignition or fuel problem. How long has it been since the fuel filter was changed? How about spark plugs and wires? Without the proper diagnostic equipment and the vehicle in front of me, these are the easiest things for the DIYer to tackle with the fuel filter being the cheapest option.
