Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

Im getting like a grinding thumping noise up front of my 2004 Silverado. The grinding is louder when I go into my 4x4. It seems to be the worst when Im turning slightly left. It started out making the noise only once in a while Now its becoming more consistant. Is it the axel or the bearing in the front differential? I dont know. Brakes and rotors are in good shape ball joints seem fine but its hard to find out what the problem is exactly.

My 2004 Silverado is displaying a similar issue - but it grinds loudly on either a sharp left or right turn at slow speed - it feels like it is winding itself up terribly then releasing that energy in burst as it skips & hops along. If you shut the truck off in this position, then try to restart it, it will lurch forward a good foot as soon as you turn the key. I have no idea what the problem is

Without a description of the noise, this is impossible to diagnose. Common problem with these vehicles is a "grinding" type noise. This will be a bearing that has gone bad or brake pads that are beyond the service life (louder screeching or grinding upon braking). Popping noises are the CV drive axles are bad (noise is typically louder when when the vehicle is in motion and turning).

Thumping noise coming from front end

If the noise indeed does get louder when turning right, I would suspect the leftside hub.

Noise in left front wheel

Grinding noise, growling noise, thumping noise? Something else? If it's a grinding noise, more than likely it is during stops. In this case it is probably metal on metal in the brake pads. If it is a growling it can be in the wheel bearing or CV shaft which usually gets louder with turning or banking. Is it is a thumping can be from a tire issue, a strut, a sway bar link banging around etc. Need to clarify the noise and how you are hearing it.

Loud noise in the front wheel

first, check your brake pads, the grinding starts when the pad is worn to the rivets that hold it, then the pad starts to crack and break away. once the pad is gone there will be play that allows whats left of the pad to move around.. causing the thump, there should also be some change under braking, like going from a thump to a grind

this could also be wheel bearings.. but my guess would be the pads, and if it got to that point.. i would bet that the rotor is shot as well
