With all due respect, you clearly lack the skills or knowledge to diagnose and fix this yourself or you would not be asking here.

Just do what the message is telling you and get the vehicle to a repair garage promptly, preferably a Volvo main dealer. The longer you delay, the bigger the final repair bill as this won't fix itself.

Testimonial: "Helpful advise, unfortunately there is no Volvo dealer garage in Nigeria. Please can you give step by step technical advise to direct a garage over here. Thank you. "

Unfortunately it's impossible to do so as it's far too complicated. The transmission in question is not a traditional electromechanical unit and requires specialist training and diagnostic equipment. The relevant chapter in the workshop manual would be the equivalent of a small book if printed out. (it's supplied on CD) and as the information and diagrams are all strictly copyright I cannot post them on FixYa. If you wish to obtain a copy of the manual yourself, then it is often available on auction websites, although you will need to make your own judgements as to the morality and legality of such sources as they're often copied/stolen. In your situation it may be your only realistic choice but neither I nor FixYa can in any way condone any illegal activity.

Your only legal choices are to either transport the vehicle to a Volvo dealer in a foreign country, or to try contacting a vehicle dealership in Nigeria with experience of high-end modern 4x4's. Even Ford may be able to help as when your Volvo was manufactured the company was under Ford ownership so may have some common technology with their own products.

Good luck, and you've just learned why Land Rover, Toyota and Nissan are still the only practical 4x4 choices outside of major developed nations.

Car doesnt move when in gear

sounds like it probably needs a transmission. volvo has been warrantying the transmissions in the 6 cylinder xc90's so you may get lucky if you have a t6. take it to a dealership and they may warranty the whole job or they may pay for the new transmission but you have to pay the labor to install it

Getting a used 2004 XC90-T6

Dont buy the T6 version. They have had TONS of transmission problems and it runs about 5-6K for a new one (dealer). My experience has seen some on their third transmission, and in my shop there are currently at least six waiting for transmissions which are on backorder due to the demand. Buy the 2.5T (5 Cyl.) or the V8, both of those are much better vehicles.

2005 XC90 T6 AWD making a whirling noise upon acceleration

Add me to the list. Just got back from a Volvo dealership in Chicago and was told the 'winding' noise we're experiencing during deceleration in our 2004 XC90 is due to a failing transmission,so i would suspect the same accelerating. hope all works out for you
