i'v been told that when crank angle sensor fails guages on dash stop by disconnecting crank angle sensor should restore gauges, is this so ? if ecu does not receive signal from crank sensor does this cause computer to shut down the 5 volt supply to all other sensors, including dash regard's adrian

Could be the Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor in short circuit to minus (chassis ground). Therefore no 5 Volts !
Try to start engine with another CKP sensor in good condition !

That is too many things to wrong at once. Have the battery tested for proper voltage. If the battery is good, you're looking at replacing the ECU. Chrysler has real problems with their electronics and is common for problems of this nature to occur. You can get these used, just make sure that all the numbers match. You can get these at most salvage yards for about $100.

A crank position sensor does not have any connection to the instrument cluster. If you would like any wiring diagrams, let me know. In the meantime, I'm trying to locate my Jeep manual.

thank,si know from previous experiance a bad crank sensor does put out the gauges, and disconecting sensor will bring them back .perhaps only if sensor shorts 5 volts to ground. have disconected crank sensor no change.would apreciate a wiring diagram of engine management system including pin out for ecu. is there a body control module that may be having some input into this theft deterant system . this vehicle does not have a transponder type key but does have additional pad for central locking locking attached to key ring/ unlock/lock/panic. unlock/lock buttons seem to opperate ok. i will proceed to disconnect all sensors using 5volt see if that will restore gauges we also do not have any check eng light showing at any time.

01 Jeep grand Cherokee I have crank but no start no gauges no power at fuel pump. All fuses good under dash & hood . Turn key to on, 1st warning light low fuel. 2nd key w/ line 3rd check engine help

you used voltmeter at the pump?> or just didnt here it run
do say this...please. details, matter....
it told you low fuel is it? is the fuel gauge near "E"
why not state that first.?
dead gauges, be 1st right, smacks of gross power loss.
right>? not clear to me what no gauges means.
but the voltmeter is #1 no?

did you tests fuse that look ok. fuse that look ok can be bad.
no gauges, means all dead, no movement,
well the fuel gauge must work , does it, does it match reality?
cranks but never runs. good input there.

does not run for the jeep 3 seconds.? (ASD rules)
no 12vdc power to pump, when cranking,?

WJ jeep
this jeep has a voltage gauge, it must read 12v keyon
if not power is lost, or battery low.
if cranks that tells me the fues blew.
skim cuts spark and fuel, not cranking btw.

see that lamp 12, if stuck on car will never start but will crank.
the lamp falses if skim is not working or stays on for ******* key.
we SCAN ALL CARS NOW.
IF You can not scan a modern jeep then it can near impossible to diagnose (a hard cold fact)
IF the ASD fails to work, the PCM tells you every time
all 8 ways for it to fail.
but that takes a scan tool (any modern scanner works,)

Check gauges light on, Temp gauge at 0, vehicle wont start.

Could be connected, but could also be two different problems.
It could be something in the key switch, or a wiring problem. Or it could be a wiring problem with the temp gauge and something else causing the engine not to start.
Do you have spark and fuel pressure at the injectors ? And does the gas gauge work ?

Where is the crank sensor located

Might be wise to check fuses and determine why dash lights don't work. Can you hear fuel pump run? Have you checked fuel pump fuse and relay? Often when a pump fails it has been drawing extra amps for some time prior to failing, which can harm the relay. If possible, hook up a fuel pressure gauge and insure you have correct pressure. Also be aware that some cheap parts store fuel pimps are junk, and may not work even when new. Also, did you clean the gunk out of the tank?

Cranks but wont start

Check your ignition module. If that is not it, I recommend checking your ignition switch i.e. the thing you insert you key into when you start. There is a possibility that your ignition switch is bad.
