Question about 1988 Toyota Corolla 4 Door

3 Answers

I have a starting problem with my 1988 Gorolla GTS Coupe. My car is a manual transmission. Intermittently, the car will not start. Whenever the car will not start, if I push the car (in 1st gear or reverse) and "pop the clutch", the car will start and run just fine. Any ideas? This has been a real aggravation, I replaced the starter, the ignition, the alternator, the battery and removed the alarm.... not a lot left.... There is no rhyme or reason to when this occurs, it just seams to happen more frequently in the summer. Thanks, John

I have the very same problem with my car at this very moment so this may help i hope... But has the ignition coil been changed since you have owned the car??
And when you first start the car does it seem to hesitate for a few seconds then run just fine??? If that is about what you are having those issuses then i am pretty sure that is what the problem is... So if i were you i'd take off the coil and take it in to your local NAPA, AUTO ZONE, or w/e you have in your town and have them test it... They should be able to give you a really good idea as to whats going on with your car... Good luck bro hope you get it solved real soon

Take it back make them fix it. It sound like the pump in the transmission is going. Thick fluid pumps easier that thin fluid and it would talk about 5 minutes for it to heat up going from thick to thin.

How do you drain the transmission fluid from a 1988 acura legend coupe?

The drain plug is on the right side of the automatic transmissions towards the front. You will get 2 to 3 quarts out and need to get Honda approved fluid (which is really Dextron I). It is $8 a quart at the dealer and the Castrol version is half the cost.

I have a 1988 celica gts coupe the heater works for about 1 mile in the morning then stops fan is ok.

The heater control panel needs to be removed and connections re-soldered. Common problem - the solder joints crack over time and the heater will default to the cold setting. At www.st162.net we have the DIY fix posted with photos. Cheers

88 Corsica Transmission Problem

It's possible a new filter and fluid may take care of this, check your transmission fluid for color,it should be clear and ruby red with now burnt smell. If its a reddish brown and cloudy definitely time for a transmission filter/fluid service.

More likely the transmission - could be the overdrive solenoid is stuck in the engaged position.
