Does the 97 vw golf gl 2.0 have 4 struts for suspension or is it struts in the front and shocks in the back?

struts in the front and shocks in the rear, the rear shocks have coil springs over the shocks, like the front struts, but you dont need to use a spring compressor tool on them which is neccessary on struts

I have a 1997 volkswagon golf, an it feels like the back end floats everytime I go over a bump. Doesn't feel very stable to me. Could it be a suspension problem?

push down hard on back end then release suddenly, should bounce up then level straight away,if it continues to bounce, one side or the other then replace both shockers(match pair) easy job.

Yes. All straight forward DiY on a Golf except for rear axle beam bushes, lot of work and a ton-press required for those, the shock abs and springs are very easy to replace.
