Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Elcipse GT 6 cyl. I have had 2 starters fail and the 3rd one is showing the early signs of failing. This one after only 2 years. I don't understand why this keeps happening. Basically it starts slow which initially got me to thinking battery. Then after a few days I get a horrible grinding metallic sound. I wait a minute or so, try again and it starts. Then it starts fine for a week and then again with the grinding sound and I can smell electronics smell. Now it has been starting ok, but this morning was a little slow again. I can't find any recalls on the starter, seems to be unique to my car.

I would replace the positive cable, and the ground cable on the vehicle, try and go larger than what is on the vehicle,I am talking about, how big around the cable is,this will give the starter more amps when starting, and less strain on the battery and the starter, but go ahead and replace the starter, because there might be some damage to it by now, also have the battery checked, load checked, and the alternator out put also.

I have no injector pulse?

Good possibility your ECU has failed. Early 90's versions of Mitsubishi ECU had weak capacitors within them. Given time and heat they would leak and fail; your lack of injector pulse is a tell-tail sign. I have personal experience at this as I have had to change out two (2) ECU on Monteros and one (1) on my son's 3000GT. When replacing the ECU you'll need to keep the same MD number this is printed on the outer shell of the ECU. You may be able to replace the capacitors on your own or go to auto parts store or, as I have done, find a rebuilt unit on EBAY.
I hope this may have assisted you,
Tom

Mitsubishi eclipse convertiable timing belt change?

Typical timing belt intervals are every 60k miles. It's a very involved service to do the whole job - timing belt, timing belt tensioner, serpentine or accessory belts, water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, all fluids, all filters, brake and suspension inspection, and tire rotation. On many cars it's recommended to change the oxygen sensors as well. Quite a bit of this can be done when you want, but the first five items are critical and should all be done. And regardless of whether your manufacturer says the coolant is "lifetime", replace it - don't reuse coolant. It's cheap and it's good practice to use new coolant.
