4runner 92 4WD problem

Hi guys, I hope someone has an answer for me I am seriously confused with my problem. On my 4runner, I tried shifting from 2H to 4L and a knocking sound occured when passed from 2H to 4H. Since then, 4L goes fine except it jumps when you start from a complete stop, neutral does it's job (no power to the any wheel ), but 4H shows a huge lack of power compared to 2H. Now the thing is you can shift the lever from 4H to 2H no problem back and fourth while rolling at any speed WITHOUT TOUCHING THE CLUTCH !!!!!!! The problem is I don't care if I can't use 4WD I don't really need it, the thing is that, even if I put it in 2H it stays engaged in 4H, thats what i mean i can move freely the lever without touching the clutch. Also, when i start from a complete stop and do a hard right turn like u turn kind the rear right tire squeals like if i was holding the hand brake and the truck jumps. I just don't get why the front differential stays engaged and the rear one shows a great resistance. Thanks for your help, I hope this isn't too much of a head ache!!!!!

This might sound like a silly question but did you put the truck in neutral before you shifted into 4L ? Reason being transfer case damage can occure if it wasnt in neutral when you shifted into 4L.

Sound like to me that the transfer case is stuck in low range cause when you turn your wheels in low range it will bounce like that i had the same problem years ago all you have to do is crawl under with a 1/2 rachet and turn your transfer case back to 2h

is this the Part time 4wd, system> option>?
Aw4 or NV231 CT or NV242 ST case?
Got Select trac? we cant guess that, and you must know it.
got PT part time? Command track 231
if yes, you must never drive in 4wd command trac on dry pavement.
only ice and dirt.
now that you got the poor joker wound up ,drive to dirt and shift out of 4wd. gingerly.

AWD has a center Differentia,l if you lack this part, then you need
to learn to use PT 4wD
here is a guy that learned the hard way

Hi. I started a dialogue with two guys earlier today, and a helpful person erased all the e-mail he didn't recognize, including theirs! I have a 1982 Ford F-150 with a 351 c.i. engine and an extended...

You have a F150 4 wheel drive 1/2 ton truck with no over drive. You should be driving in 2H. 2H is 2 wheel drive high gear. And 3,000 RPM is not bad.
(1) You can get a after market over drive.
(2) You can change the gearing in the front and rear ends to higher gears.
(3) If you don't have locking you can change to locking hubs. If you do have locking hubs make sure they are unlocked.
All of these thing will help to lower your RPM and increase MPG.

The switch could be bad, but if you cannot select 4H or 2H, I would think the shift motor in the transfer case is the issue.
This is assuming when you posted "control switch be bad", that you have an ESOF ( Electronic Shift on the Fly ) system.

Some times the Shift motor in the transfer case hangs up, and tapping the back of the transfer case cures the problem. The other thing could be the connector on the transfer case is corroded, remove the connector, and check it for water and other junk, clean if necessary.

You can remove the switch from the dash, and check the resistance on it.

If you secure the truck ( chock the wheels, parking brake, etc ) and having someone turn the ESOF switch from 4L to 2H or 4H, while tapping on the transfer case, this would be a good place to start.

Look for damaged wires, or something bent, on the Auto Disconnect Device on the front axle before you do anything else. The 4WD HI light is not coming on because the front diff is not engaging.
Re 4 LO: In 4 LO, you ar NOT getting "4 LO", what you are really getting 2WD LO, because of the output gearing of the transfer case.
In any case, your front diff is not locking in, in either mode. The A.D.D. controls the 4 Hi lite.

I would first check the wires on the transfer case for possible damage at the 2wd/4wd switch.

The shift gate or the synchronizers can be worn. Also the clutch can need adjustment if possible.
