Question about 2001 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

I just purchased a 2001 Jetta and I have an issue with the key/lock mechanism. The key seems to work as it should, turn it to the right and it locks the car. Turn it to the left and it unlocks, however I cannot open the car by pulling the handle from the outside. If I lower the windows (with the key) I can open the car from the inside. Once it is open from the inside, I can pull the outside handle and it opens fine, but once you lock it, same thing happens.

Can vw jetta tdi mechanics key used incorrectly cause the car not to start?

If you mean the valet key, no. I use that key frequently in my 2001 TDI.
Only the ignition switch has a receiver to identify the chip in the key fobs but the valet key has the chip also.

Jetta key won t unlock door

It's the key. Go back to the mechanic and ask them to have a locksmith fix the issue at their cost.

How do i shut my alarm off on my 98 jetta without a remote or where do i look for it otake it out

The key lock on the driver's side door is mechanically linked to a switch that turns the alarm on and off. You don't need a remote. Locking the door with the key turns the alarm on. Unlocking turns it off. I think the remote actually works through the same switch by mechanically locking or unlocking the door.

I've had a problem with mine intermittently setting off a false alarm as soon as the alarm is armed, which is about a minute after locking the door. It seems to be a problem with a switch in the trunk lid, because opening and closing the trunk is the only thing which relates to the problem appearing or not.

So my workaround, if the alarm is screwing up and I'm in a hurry, is to get out and walk around to the passenger side, open the door, press the dashboard door lock control to lock the doors, then close the door. That locks the doors without turning on the alarm system. To get back in I just use the remote or the door key.

Key will not go round far enough to start the vehicle.

LOL, I had what I believe to be this problem when I first owned my Jetta. What happens is the steering wheel gets spring loaded against the lock mechanism. All you gotta do is torque your wheel in one direction or another and it will take the pressure off the lock allowing you to turn the key all the way. Hope this is the answer you were needing!

I have a 2001 C240 with the same issue. I removed the positive battery cable from the battery and kept it off for 30 seconds then replaced it. Everything was reset and the key worked.

Key stuck in jetta door lock

Cheapest way is to get a second hand one with a key from a breakers you will have a different key for the lock. The mechanic probably can't give you an estimate because he will get a genuine one from V.W. with the V.I.N. of your car so the same key will fit both door and ignition. This will cost a lot V.W. new part's are expensive

2001 VW Jetta 1.8L - Front RH Door Lock won't lock

I have a similar issue on a 2001 Jetta sedan. jandkat seems to be talking about the old system that VW used (pre-1998). To my knowledge there is no vacuum-based locks in the 2001 models. I've had the door completely apart and there are defiantly not any vacuum hoses. The only 100% for sure fix I have found is to replace the door latch mechanism. There are some other options but I'm not sure they would completely fix the issues you are having. Now for the bad news: you can only get this door latch mechanism from VW dealers. I have yet to find a place online or elsewhere that carries them. They are around $185 for the latching mechanism and if you don't want to install it, be prepared to pay another $200 or so in labor. If you do want to do it yourself, here is a great site that has step-by-step how to take a VW door apart: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1015107

Hope this helps
