Back brakes on escort not up to scratch

Failed mot on poor back brakes . have changed shoes ,cilinders,put on good drums and bled the system but they still dont seem to hold the wheel when under strain

Have you adjusted the shoes prior to fitting the drums? I know that they are supposed to be self adjusting but if there is too much gap between the shoe and the drum, the auto adjust takes too long to catch up

Can not get rear brake drum back on ford escort


The auto adjuster needs to be released! It should be a knurled nut or notched nut, turn it a bit to close the shoes! When you press the brake pedal after fitting hub and wheels they will automatically reset!

I would go with not bled correctly

The booster should hold up with a hard pedal until
you start the engine, then vacuum causes it to move
down when pressing on the brake

Brake pedal is mushy all the way to the floor. Have already replaced front calipers, master cylinder, and bled all the brakes. Pedal still goes all the way to the floor when stopping the car.


If the car has drum brakes in the rear, Jack the rear up and have someone push the brake pedal hard and you try to turn the wheel. If you can turn it you need to adjust the rear shoes. They may be traveling out so far that the fluid level drops causing the pedal to go to the floor. You must adjust them with the drum on till you hear and feel the shoes rubbing against the drum. Hope this helps.

1998 ford escort se hand brake need adjusting. doesn't hold.


Try to adjust the rear brakes tighter at the shoes, if you have drum brakes. May require taking the drum off and adjusting the adjuster. Or, adjusting it from the backing plate access hole if there is one.

Be sure to check the cables to make sure they are not broken anywhere between the hand brake lever and the back brakes.

ADJUSTMENT


  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drum.
  4. Using a brake adjusting gauge, measure the inside diameter of the brake
    drum.
  5. Compare the brake drum measurement to the brake shoes.
  6. Adjust the brake shoes by inserting a brake adjustment tool into the knurled
    quadrant of the rear quad operating lever and adjust the shoes to the same
    measurement as the brake drum.
  7. Install the brake drum.
  8. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Check the brake system operation by making several stops while driving
    slowly forward.

Take tires off then inspect rear brake shoes if okay and not down to the metal service the drums with sand paper and put them back on you might have to replace the drums and shoes!

Spongy brake pedal even after ABS bleed and base brake bleed.


Did you adjust the rear shoes out? If the rear drum brakes are out of adjustment they will give you a lot of pedal travel. If the pads are worn have no fear of that U-CLIP brake spring, just change one shoe at a time. Take the spring off one side, change the shoe, put the spring back on the post and do the same to the other shoe, no problem.

hi, this could mean one of a couple of things it could be that the brake shoes on the back need replacing and its always best to replace both sides, when you buy them you buy both sides.
It could also be that the cylinder that pushes the brakes shoes onto the hub this could have a seal gone in it causing brake fluid to leak inside the drum. if this is the case then you need to replace the cylinder and the shoes as the brake fluid would have leaked onto the shoes making them brittle reducing the power of the brakes on that one side.
It could also be that the cylinder has seized their fore it will need replacing.

Either way you are going to have to remove the drum on that one side to check for any of these problems you will be able to see if the shoes are low or if the cylinder is leaking as fluid would be visible comin out of one side of the cylinder.

It can be a difficult job to replace the brake shoes so if you are unsure then please leave to a pro as you might find you cant get the clips back on that hold the shoes onto the inner hub and also the springs that run from one shoe to the other can be a real pain to get back on after so be warned.

Cannot remove rear brake drums


You need to back off the adjusters on the rear shoes to allow the worn drum to pass over the brake shoes.
A worn drum will have a unworn drum section on its outer edge where the brake shoes don't normally rub.
This must unworn ring must be able to pass over the brake shoes before you can get the drum off.

Two tools should be used through the brake adjuster access hole.
One small diameter blade screwdriver can be used to push the self adjuster lever away from the notched adjuster nut, while a second flat bladed tool is used to lever the adjuster nut, rotating it so as to back off brake shoe expander adjustment.

Rear brakes uneven breaking as per mot tester


The Chardes have a diagonal split system, so one of the front discs is plumbed to the diagonally located rear drum.

You may need to check the front brakes too and that they have been bleed properly.

Other common cause of uneven braking are:

seized wheel cylinder;
brake hose obstruction or weakend wall;
weak pull off spring on shoe;
uneven drum roundness;
compensator/proportioning valve dicky.
