Question about 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

I need to change the rear axle seal on my 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 4X4. I was wondering how difficult it is to change and if I need any special tools to do so.

To replace the rear axle seal the hub assembly has to be removed. To do so remove the 8 axle bolts and slide axle out. Remove hub nut.

Slide hub assembly off of axle spindle.
The axle has to come all the way off and the hub has to be slid all the way off.

Determine rear axle type (example 4:11)


the build sheet codes are affixed inside the glove box
It will have the letter G with two numbers after it as like G80. Some may have two letters and one number but unlikely so
The G code will determine the ratio of yours without ripping off the rear cover to count the teeth and divide what you have

I have a 2003 half a ton chevy silverado that the driver side rear axle is leaking. I need to know how to adjust the shims on the ring in pinion ?


well if the axle is leaking you dont need to adjust the shims, it needs a new seal. pull the brakes off open the rear diff there will be a c lip holding the axle in, remove the c lip pull the axle repalce the seal on the end of the axle tube, put it all back together and you done

if youre asking this question,you should have it done by a shop! u have to open up rear diff.undo pinion,c lock,take off tire,undo disc brake or drum,and pull out axle,undo the 15$ seal!

On your 05 Chevy 4X4 2500HD.
The Pinion Yoke Nut, 9.75" Axle. the torq spec. is 370 Nm. -- 273 Lb ft.
