Question about 1990 GMC C1500

1 Answer

I have a 1990 GMC Z71 4X4 with a 350 TBI 217K my problem that I cannot figure out is after giving the truck new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, TPS and vac. line, O2, Map sensor and vac. line, air cleaner gasket, fuel filter--NO EGR on motor.. The truck just doesn`t want to go once it hits second and will burp through the TBI leaving the truck with very little power getting to speed. Had timing check by a local and said it was off 3- degrees, returned it back to 0, and truck ran worse. I can hear the fuel pump kick on and is my understanding that either they work or they don`t. I don`t have any problems starting the truck and does not die when stopping, but will maintain a higher idle at stops and when put back into park. After the truck is at temp., to restart the truck will bring idle down until driving starts again. what more can be done to make me a happy man to a happy motor. And is there a safe way to lift a motor when you do not have a engine hoist. Hopefully someone can help.

Why does my 2.5 GMC sonoma truck skips or misses?

Worn timing belt or bad map sensor, weak ignition coil, worn distributor gear (usually starts hard with that) Leaking manifold gaskets all possible causes. Start with a new coil, spray starting fluid around manifold gasket while running, if it revs up in any certain spots, manifold leaking (intake only test), check vacuum lines for cracks and leaks,(MAP) replace sensor. Over 75,000 miles probably timing belt, recommended change interval is 60,000 miles.

Are you a TBI?(throttle body injector) if you are take the top of the air cleaner out step on the gas pedal(do this in park hood open fire extinguisher on the ready.) does it backfire through the air cleaner if it does you are in need of a whole distributor unit the distributor unit has a relector that has a high tendency for failure by the way the vehicle sound there is only 2 possible problems you coil is faulty and this includes the connection to the coil which has a tendency to seperateor the connection to the ICM.(ignition control module where the coil is) or the whole distributor reluctor

Check dist. cap and rotor and replace. Just fixed one last week. Rotor was causing a misfire under load and coil contact to rotor was worn out down too the cap. Graphite dust from the center contact in cap was all over the rotor causing a misfire. $25.00 in parts or less. While you are there replace wires and plugs. Autolite ap25 plugs 2.99 each

Rough idle and accelleration in my 89 GMC truck with a 350 TBI

Try a new distributer cap and rotor button, these are notorious for wearing out the carbon pick-ups and leaving carbon tracks in the cap which messes up the fireing order. If that does'nt fix it try plugs and wires.

By module do you mean computer? There's nothing wrong with it. Yea, replace all ignition components with new ones. New cap, rotor, wires and spark plugs.

No start.

You have fuel pressure but the TBI could be clogged. You have spark and the engine runs when given gas. I would look into the TBI. Don't believe it's in the timing either.

Good Luck
