Hi i think you mean the starter not the alternator? anyhoo if you look under the vehicle where the gearbox is ( transmission if usa ) it will be on one side of the gearbox, if you tap it and get someone to turn the motor over while you are doing it, sometimes you can free the solenoid and it will start working again, just make sure if you do this you are not near any moving parts.....hope this helps

Sounds like a weak solenoid on the starter. Probably needs starter replacement. Those cars need a mechanic to work on them.

Hi Dave honestly sounds to me like ya could have had an alternator go out on ya. I would check the actual voltage with a meeter, if it is above 12v then I would locate the starter relay in the junction box under the hood and jump the relay and see if the starter engages. another key thing to check is the small wire on the starter as these were prone to bad connection because of the slide on style connection. hope this leads ya in the right direction

1985 nissan 300z wont crank

When you switch the ignition wont start or crank, right? but did you hear a tikiting sound? if you do then the problem was your starter, either the solenoid in your starter was faulty or the starter itself might be grounder or shorted.Replace the solenoid if deffective or starter but before you do that check your battery.
Next is to check your electrical line from the ignition to the starter and also from your battery going to the starter, if there is a connectivity it means your line is good.
Next you said it has to be push to start and run but when you shut it off it wont start? It means your alternator was not charging properly, so it was deffective, the battery lost its power. replace or repair your alternator.
Hope this will help you, good luck!!!

Truck Wont Start and Battery Runs Down.

get a load test done on you battery and alter nator and check your starter for corrision check battery connections before you jump start it and when hooking up cables to your truck let it charge for a few minutes before you crank it if alternator is fried it will only run on juice of battery then will die.the clicking sound is your starter trying to engage but not enough cranking amps left in battery if you can get it going or take the battery out and take to a good auto shop and get them to load test it no point replacing a good battery just to find out it is alternator or starter
I personaaly think it may be alternator but suggest you test if battery is good starter as well ! more thing check that battery terminals are clean and tight

Will not crank or turn over... tried a jump, still no turn over... just a dead thunk sound when turning the key on. got a new battery about 6 months ago. Noticed when car lights are on the time clock on...

when you turn on the light the display on you clock goes into night mode, sound like you engine is hydrolocked, pull the spark plugs and try it, if water comes out you have a bad head gasket,

The 3.8 series 2 engine doesnt turn over with the

sounds like it needs an ignition switch. the reason it dies after a few seconds after jumping the starter is bc the security system from gm thinks you're stealing the car so it kills the fire. the security system goes thru the key so if the switch is bad, it wont run no matter how you try to crank it

Car wont start. tried to jump but engine will not

Hi,
There may be another possibility... there are safety switches which would also prevent a switch actuating a starter. If the vehicle is not fully registered in park or neutral, the switch will not allow the starter to work.
Check this first.
If this isn't the case, have the starter pulled and get Autozone to check it for you.
I don't think the alternator's a factor here.
I hope this helps... Good luck.

On my 99 beetle the engine rotates but wont start and when you stop turning the key the engine whines would this be a starter problem?

Could very well be a starter problem, but I typically suggest that one should check out the condition of the battery (may not be throwing sufficient amps to crank the starter), and then the alternator to make certain the alternator is providing enough amps to fully charge the battery.

Sounds like the starter is actually turning, just not fully engaging. when a starter dies 6 out of 10 times it's a bad selenoid (causing a loud clicking sound instead of the starter engaging). Doesn't sound like your immediate problem.

Try jump starting the Beetle. If it starts that was it's probably a battery or alternator issue. If your successful in getting the car started your local autoparts store (AutoZone, Advance Auto or O'Reillys) can test your battery and alternator for Free. Call before you go to make certain that their testing equipment is functioning.

94 ford explorer, starter won't turn

If you have the proper voltage at the starter, (battery voltage) and the starter won't turn, it is the starter or the engine. Try turning the engine over with a wrench on the harmonic balancer.
