Question about 2000 Saturn SL
I parked a 2000 Saturn Sl1 over the winter and when started this spring it runs very rough , idling is erratic , acceleration is very poor , service engine light flashing after a couple of minutes . Pulled individual spark plug wires and found that there was only a spark on cylinders 2 and 3 --the engine actually stalled when either 2 or 3 was unplugged , but nothing happemed when disconnecting 1 or 4 . Is it a coil problem ?
Yes, these are misfires on cylinders #1 and #4 if nothing happened when disconnecting #1 or #4. First, replace #1 and #4 spark plugs with good pieces, (eventually by #2 and #3 spark plugs). Test engine running. If same bad erratic idling & poor acceleration caused by cylinders #1 and #4, then ignition coils #1 and #4 are damaged and need to be replaced! You can also swap ignition coils between cylinders #1 and #2 & #4 and #3. If misfires occur now on #2 and #3 cylinders, then ignition coils #1 and #4 are damaged and need to be replaced!
