Do you have an engine light on by your speedometer? Check engine? if so bring it to autozone or equivalent they should scan it for free and they can tell exactly what is causing this. If it were a timing belt there is a sensor on distributor telling the valve timing is off so if you do not have a check engine light on you can disregard the timing belt causing the problem. if you dont know when the last time you had a tune up now would be a good time to do one. This includes all of the following spark plugs and definitly plug wires which i would goto the dealer for they have the best wires and they arent that expensive. also do cap and rotor if applicable, you might have coils im not sure. Do the fuel filter. also might want to spray alittle throttle body cleaner into the throttle body and work it in. NOT CARBURETOR CLEANER. If after you do this or you did ALL of these things and no check engine light on try this out have a friend if you can get it running step on the gas in NEUTRAL and rev at about 2000 rpms and you go feel the tailpipe pressure to see maybe that your catalytic converter is not clogging exhaust.

have you had the catalytic converter checked at the local exhaust shop? try that first. is the truck a 4wd? time to start checking the ujoints. do a compression check on all cylinders and see if there is a major drop in that hole that is misfiring. let me know what you come up with.

if the trouble came back then there is something more. check the fuel system: filter, injectors, air/fuel ratio, etc. also better to check/replace the other 3 coils. sometimes electrical connections may be loose.

All MX-5's are MIATA'S. the coil pack may be bad. 3000 rpms at 20mph, sounds like the trans is slipping if it was an automatic trans. it helps when you tell EVERYTHING about the car, like what trans is has, ect.
