Question about 2003 Mercury Mariner

2 Answers

I have a 2003 model 25hp mercury, which i have just purchased 2nd hand. on pre buy test i noticed that the initial water pressure on tell tale was not consistant, was almost hot but cleared and became normal after 60 seconds or so.I replaced the impeller kit and thermostat as soon as i bought it home thinking that was the problem. the same thing still happens but water is slightly cooler. The power head seems to be staying quite respectable, but i know this is not normal. can you tell me what else this could be please.

Some of the later 25's had a thermostat on the cooling water. It is quite normal for these engines to sort of splutter water then after a minute or three start a strong stream. As they cool they then splutter before the thermostat opens again etc etc.

Could be a blockage in the head or the radiator. Try replacing the radiator as this is the most possible point as more water Rests in this area to cause settling. I know the radiator isn't really cheap, like the thermostat, but it will keep you from having more expensive problems, such as a cracked head.

I am planning to buy used Toyota Camry 2003 with 131K mileage on it. Can you please tell me common problems which I should be looking in it before buying the same.

This particular vehicle is very dependable and reliable. You will get normal maintenence issues brakes/belts etc. However, in my experience, I cannot think of any major issues this model has been troubled with. It would be a good idea to have a pro dp a pre purchase inspection to determine if there are any signs of collission or abnormal engine noises etc. before you by.

I replaced the thermostat, but it still blows cold air. What gives?

The ford taurus and mercury sable are very well know to have coolant pressure, heat problems. I have worked on a minimum of 300 of these specific vehicles in my career, I can tell you the system is a headache, yet manageable. Are you getting cold air through the vents? is the blower motor working? Is your antifreeze brown in color or goo like? (a tell tale sign of a broken water pump and 90% probability of a clogged heater core.
also other basics, have you flushed the system and checked to make sure the car is not air bound?

1st issue. My car has suddenly started smoking, white smoke from the exhaust, did I overfill the oil or is it more sinister than that. I haven't lost power that i can notice. Will excess oil burn off like...

You might be looking at a head, or head gasket issue. White smoke is usually due to coolant mixing in your combustion chamber, or cylinder. Blue smoke is from oil. Your loss of coolant and high temperature might be the clue. A leak down test and coolant system pressure test should tell the tale for you.

Could you please let me know if it is okay to mix

It's better if you boil it first. Or...buy distilled water. They also sell pre-mixed coolant, that's ready to use.
