High pitch shriek from engine, cracking sound from oil dip hole

I have a 1994 bmw 318 and I am starting to hear a high pitch shrieking sound coming from the engine area. When I pull out the oil dipstick the shrieking sound disappears but there appears to be some cracking noise coming from the dip stick hole. Possibly related is that I have recently found my coolant fluid level went almost to zero and could not find any obvious leak. The oil looked fine and it doesn't appear to be mixed with water. I have just topped the coolant recently. Thanks!

SOURCE: High oil Consumption, BMW M5

Look for Castrol TWS 10W60 Motor Oil. This car should not burn so much oil, you need to use a different kind. It is recommended by BMW as well. I also heard the VANOS isnt an issue anymore, can be fixed with a different MAFF. Good luck!

SOURCE: BMW 325i BAD transmission fluid leak/gush

i have to admit without more detail it's hard to say.... my educated guess would be that one of the hoses to the transmission cooler has blow and needs to be replaced. do NOT drive the car till that is done.

SOURCE: BMW X3 2.5si M series. High Oil Consumption

hi, this consumption seems high, i would take it to a dealer and ask them to check the oil sensor.......
P.S. is there a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust, if so, it may be burning a little oil, ask dealer to check it

Try to better describe the noise.
Is it a
scraping of metal
grinding / rubbing
high pitched shriek like a drive belt slipping
Is it
underneath the body
under the hood
in the aircon
when you pull into gear
when you pull away
etc
Do a bit of detective work and come back.

some where you have a large vaccum leak, what i would do is get your self a squirt bottle with water start the motor and start squirting all around the vaccum lines first, when the motor starts to bogg down you have found your vaccum leak. but make sure that you do the whole motor and make sure theres not more than one leak.

White smoke usually not a good thing. Does the engine turn over with the starter? If so try adding oil and see what happen's.

Squealing noise Upon slow acceleration

have you had the alternator or fan belt checked as they will squeel when they are loose and you accelerate.
This may not be the problem but it is a cheap fit if it is the problem.

L MARK shrieking noise

No, do not spray oil on your belts. Have the belt replaced if that's where the noise is coming from. The squeaky belt could also indicate one of the accessories may be bad. Have who ever replacing the belt check to make sure all the accessory pulleys turn freely.
