Question about 1986 Oldsmobile Delta 88

1 Answer

1999 Oldsmobile Delta 88. 166k miles. Car runs great for miles until you come to a stop. It begins to shudder the tachometer jumps around a little and it stalls. It'll start again after a few minutes but until then it just tries to start with a fast starter sound. I bought the car for my son and we registered and insured it this morning. It died this afternoon. Again when it's running it runs great.  Temperature is good power is good you'd never know it had any issues at all. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You most likely just need the tach repaired, they do fail. There is a company called Speedotach that repairs these as well as others, just google it

Hard to say on a older car such as this. If running well and healthly it should receive around 16 to 18 highway miles per gallon

I would take it to the nearest parts supplier (NAPA, Autozone) and have the computer codes pulled. They usually do it for free. This will give you an idea of what is wrong with the car. It really could be anything at this point. It doesn't sound like anything major however. You can start by doing a basic tuneup plugs, wires, ignition coil. You can also look for vacuum leaks as this sounds like it could be one. inspect the vacuum hoses for any onvious leaks or cracks and repair or replace them. If you are in doubt weather a hose is bad just replace it. They are cheap. It could also be an idle control solenoid. This should show up in the computer trouble codes however.

If you dont was to take it to have the codes pulled you can start disconnecting sensors, when you get to the faulty sensor the car may quit its eratic behavior. I would recommend getting the codes pulled first however and going from there.

COULD BE GROUND PROBLEMS OR THE TACH GOING BAD.EVEN THOUGH CAR SEEMS TO BE RUNNING GOOD IDLING GOOD.SOME TIMES A SPARK PLUG MISFIRE.CAUSING A LITTLE ROUGH IDLING CAUSING TACH NEEDLE TO GO CRAZY.I SEEN ALTERNATOR WITH VOLTAGE REGULATOR GOING BAD CAUSE A POWER SURGE CAUSING HEAD LIGHTS TO DIM A LITTLE THEN BRIGHT WHILE ENGINE IDLING.THIS WILL CAUSE TACH METER NEEDLE BOUNCE AROUND ALSO.
