Question about 1997 Saturn SC

My '97 saturn had a hard time shifting gears going up hills the rpm would jump really high and the car started shaking violently. eventually the car would just turn off. i put in transmission fluid, oil, even anti-freeze just for the hell of it but still it kept stalling. i eventually had it towed away since i was so far away from home and wasnt going to drive 10 hours going 10 mph. what does this sound like??

Sounds like a faulty throttle position sensor TPS. This is located on the outside of throttle body on the end of the throttle shaft. If there is no proper feedback of throttle position the ECu is unable to maintain a stable throttle and this in turn makes the gear change very erratic. It has three electrical connections. The device internally consists, most usually, of a curved carbon track with an electrical connection at both ends and a rotary contact slider that moves to a point on the curved carbon track determined by the amount that the throttle is open. The curved carbon track has a resistance associated with it so the voltage that is returned by the throttle contact tells the ECU the throttle position. When the throttle is closed the voltage is low (0 to 0.49 volts) and when fully open it is high (5 volts) The three electrical connections consist of the contact points at each end of the track and the middle connection is the sliding throttle contact. OK check that the wires are all where they should be. Put a volt meter on the connections and record the voltages. When the voltmeter is on the middle pin the voltage should vary evenly as the throttle is opened and closed: use the accelerator lever cam or, if you have remove the air filter piping, you can use your fingers on the throttle flap. If the voltages are uneven replace the TPS

Check with dealer if your car has a "idle speed control motor"?;I'd start with that and make sure your car's had timing done right. Hope this helps. Alberto

Violent Shaking

No check engine light on? If it jumps rapidly, then it can only be due to the transmission changing gears, or slipping clutches. Either way, there should be a fault code set in the PCM. You need to get it scanned first to know the fault code.

2006 Hyundai Elantra with 2.0 automatic with 111000 miles. Car is hesitating and begins shaking going up steep hills. Problem seems the worst at around 3000 rpm going up hill. The car wont stop shaking...

There's many reasons this can happen, but start simple. Fuel pump may be failing. Usually under load they can not supply the fuel the engine is demanding. (Up hill acceleration is a classic example). change the fuel filter first, if that doesn't not correct the problem, test fuel system pressure. (:

I have a 97 audi a4 1.8t. with trans problem.

check oil level in gearbox, if auto check fault memory, will go into emergency mode and stay in 3rd if there is a fault. gear position display will all light up.

When I engage the cruise control is holds speed but rmp surges periodically around 2-300 rpm.

It could be your transmission trying to find the right gear it will jump around on diffrent road surfaces and going up hills/down hills. It is usaully noticable on cruise because it is at a constant speed and your thinking why would it need to shift. Sometimes it doesnt even really shift the gear its so inbetween it just jumps back really fast.

With normal acceleration the 1st to second shift point should be around 2500-3000 rpm. Most of your shifts under moderate acceleration will take place at this same point or when there a light load on the transmission. Under hard acceleration the RPMs will climp higher due to increased power needs and the computer will shift when less power is needed or the RPMs climb to an unsafe speed say5000-6000rpms (depending on where yours redlines). Also going up a steep hill will raise the RPMs higher and goind down a hill will cause a faster shift at lower RPMs. These can always be altered by an individual owner by adjusting shift points, using performance parts and if you have problems (low tranny fluid/trans issues). Your trans RPMS are fine and will vary depening on how your foot accelerates. The shift pattern should be the same every time you drive slow/medium/fast/, look for changes in those patterns you will also catch a problem early.

I have a 97 Saturn SL1 manual transmission. For a

well sounds like maybe the shift rail is bent, this will require the transmission to be removed and repaired, u will need a professional to check this for, the trans is a very expensive repair, so guessing is not a good idea, it can be some other problem, we are really just giving general info from here, hard to diagnose a problem we can't see 1st hand..

theres many things that can be the cause,instead of having people tell you to try this and that,change this and that,scan codes it will point you at problem area and start from there

The engine in my 96 saturn wagon shakes when it is put into gear, reverse or drive.

remove the belt and spin all of the pulleys by hand to make sure they all spin freely. the knocking noise is probebly a pulley locked up.
