Read your new switch open and closed..does it work properly. pull fuse out make sure that its wired to correct fuse system the lights should go out when fuse is pulled, if they do go out then further troubleshooting is required to find a short ..the light is getting a short after the brake switch, maybe look into your turn/hazard switch assembly.

SOURCE: brake lights wont turn on.1994 gmc sierra.

This may sound too simple, but first verify that you are getting voltage to the light socket. Use meter on d.c. If you are getting voltage, and your bulb is good, it could be a bad ground. Don't overlook the brake light system goes through the directional signal in the steering column.

SOURCE: replaced brake light switch, checked

Look closely at trailer wiring, I highly suspect where it connects to your truck is the issue. Not the plug, but the trucks wiring from lights to trailer plug. I'll bet ground is loose or off.

I have a 2000 Mercedes E430 base sedan. Last week I replaced the brake light switch because it was out and it solved the problem to the point that I can now put my car into gear and drive it, however, as...

Brake light switch problem may cause the ESP / BAS lights to illuminate.

Common symptoms of a bad
Mercedes brake light switch.
  • Car stuck in Park.
  • ABS ESP ETS lights come on.
  • Can not move the shifter from Park to Drive.
  • Brakes Defective Warning on Instrument Cluster
  • Car won't shift gears. Stuck in 2nd gear, limp mode.
  • Brake lights don't work. (Brake light switch can still be defective even if the brake lights work. Checking the brake light operation is not a good test.)
  • ESP, BAS, ABS lights turn on. Car won't shift properly. Stuck in gear.

TEST: To test your new brake light switch: Turn you car off to reset the ABS light. apply the parking brake. and start the car in neutral or park without using the brake. if the problem is the brake light switch... the light will only come on when you press the brake pedal.

If you replaced the brake light switch and the light is still on you should check a few other things such as:

  • Fuses and Relays
  • ABS pump
  • ABS wheel speed sensor
  • Brake Fluid Level
  • Get an advanced scanner to read trouble codes.

NOTE: ** You may need a MBZ scan tool to reset the error code which was stored in the ECU because of the bad brake light switch.

Batterie and brake light stays on changed new batterie new alternator car ran fine the next day the car would not crank

There is obviously have a drain on the battery. You have a faulty break light pedal switch causing the lights to stay on, or your turn signal switch is bad. your brake lights run through, the turn signal switch too. That could also cause the problem.

My break light swithes on sometimes without me even pressing the breaks. The break light also sometimes stays on even when I have taken my feet off the break. I have tried changed the break light switch...

Did you adjust the brake light switch correctly? To adjust the brake light switch, first press the brake pedal down a few inches, then pull the switch plunger rod out of the switch toward the brake pedal arm, as far as you can without using excessive force. Next, return the brake pedal to the pedal stop position against the pedal stop and pull the brake pedal toward the rear to push the brake light switch actuating plunger rod into the switch housing limited by the travel of the brake pedal arm rear travel stop position. This procedure automatically adjusts the brake light switch correctly.
If the brake lights still don't turn off with the brake pedal released, check the brake pedal arm for sticking or binding that is preventing the brake pedal arm from returning fully to the pedal stop when the brake is released.

If the third brake light, or "Center High Mounted" brake light is working but the main brake lights do not then the problem will be the turn-signal switch, and the wiring for the rear lights is ran through the turn-signal switch, and I have replaced many turn-signal switches in many vehicles because only the brake lights were inoperable, and after the fuse, and the brake light switch, it is the next part in line to cause both of the rear main brake lights to not function. If the center high mounted brake light and all of the other lights do function normally, then that would indicate that the fuses and the brake light switch are functioning properly, and the problem will be in the turn-signal switch. The turn-signal switch for that vehicle is between 50 and 80 dollars from most auto part stores, and you can have a repair shop install the turn-signal switch for you or you can install it yourself if you have any mechanical inclination or skills with hand tools, and the only special tools you will need will be a steering wheel puller and a steering lock plate tool, and most auto part stores will rent them out to you or some will even lend them out to you if you have purchased a part from them, and let me know if you require any help to replace that turn-signal switch or any further assistance.

Brake lights don't work. Only center light works. I have changed bulbs and checked fuse. What else could it be?

The brake light switch CAN NOT be at fault because your center brake light works .What is going on is a bad turn signal multifunction switch in the steering is plastic and the brake circuit flows through this has well has your turn signals.

replace the turn signal switch in the column.its also known as a multifunction switch. you have to remove the cover around the steering column to access the switch. The brake light wiring also goes to this switch.
