Don't rule out getting a bad replacement fuel pump. it sucks but it has happened to me twice. verify you still have a fuel problem by getting a can of starting fluid and open the air box, have someone spray into the side going to the engine while you are trying to start the engine. it should fire if the fuel pump is the problem. good luck

You haven't flooded the engine correct, check the spark plugs. Also, how fresh is the gas? Try shaking the car to get the gas mixed up and try cleaning out the cylinders with a torch to blow out excess gas. You should also either try cleaning the spark plugs or replace them if they look bad. It is starting up fine, correct? The alternator is good, right? I believe it is since it sounds like you didn't drive it long enough to drain the battery but check it anyway. By losing power, did the electronics start shutting off first or did the engine die first as this would show whether the alternator is bad or not. Please answer my questions and get back to me on what shut off first when it died and I will help you narrow down the problem with this car.

good luck

2002 ford escort zx2 replaced fuel filter, air filter, plugs, and MAS...why won't it stay running?

it could be down to your spark plug leads take the leads out one by one and get somebody to hold the lead to the engine [to earth it] NOT WITH YOUR HAND with something thats not conductive like something plastic then try starting the engine to see if a spark jumps from the lead and repeat this please dont do this with your hand its very dangerous enouf voltage to knock you out!

i would check the spark plugs first. if your engine overheated to a certain extreme you could have burned out your spark plugs. other than that you could have a bad thermistat which caused your car to overheat in the first place which in turn burned out your water pump. its hard to say though. have you had overheating problems previously?

Poor engine start

the only thing that comes to mind is, the fuel pump may be weak and not pumping enough fuel when cold. check fuel pump pressure. or replace pump.

Instructions for replacing fuel pump in a 2001 ford Escort ZX2

Remove the rear seat, remove the 4 screws holding the metal cover, and you'll see the top of the fuel tank. The pump module is held in place by a locking ring that can be removed by use of a brass punch and hammer. If the ring is rusted, it'll get damaged during removal and will need replaced. You can get a new ring from Ford. Once the ring is removed, you can pull the pump module out. Remove the small screws from the top of the module and you can pull the top off of the basket to gain access to the fuel pump. Replace the pump and get new fuel pump strainers.
