Usually you get transmission from cars that have avg life mileage and have been totalled by the insurance and parted out, so if the car was just involved in a wreck, the transmission should be o.k. for at least another 50k, i had to do the same thing with one of my cars the tranny cost me $600 ten years ago, so you get what you pay for..there should not be a burnt smell, and fliud should be nice and red. if black, i would be suspect that it was never maintained, shy away from that. Black usually could mean a lot of wear on the clutch plates. you could also, if you find one that you think is good, and the junk yard allows it ...drop the pan and look for metal savings, if there's a lot, dont buy it. Usually you will see a "tiny" little bit, this is normal wear on and older car. if you liked this info, could you rate this answer. Thanks.

I have a 1987 econoline motor home the tranny works in all forward gears but when put into reverse it feels like it nudges back a little then stops

Yes, that is typical response to a gear going out. Pretty old tranny, you will need a replacement, local salvage yards, or look at Car-Part.com for a used unit from all over, US salvagers list used parts on there..

You answered your own question.
They don't look the same,so why not return it.

Having owned a Trans Shop, I will tell you, getting a used trans will be the worst auto repair decision of your life.

Your buying something most likely worse than your pulling out of yours.

All Auto Trans need to be perfectly super clean inside to work well.
80% of all failures are due to not changing the fluid every 30,000 miles or two years.

Your best bet is what is called over-the-counter. You drop off your trans at a shop, they rebuild it with the latest updates and you install a rebuilt converter, adding a quart of fluid first.

All transaxles, especially van type ,don't hold up well. Not many see 100K.

You never want to have a front end collision with a van and expect your quality of life to be very good afterward. A larger SUV is safer and rear wheel trans, hold up pretty well.

I need a trans dip stick for a 91 ford aerostar used is fine

Have you tried a local salvage yard? Wrecking yard? Junk yard? Or if there are none convienent, how about looking on Ebay? Or checking with your local Auto Parts store, AutoZone, O'Reillys, Advance, ect. I'd try the junk yards first, and if none available, then the aftermarket stores. Good luck, and good hunting.

1990 300 zx transmission problems

I also have a 1990 300zx N/A 2+2, the transmission is computer driven, as is almost everything on the car has different computers.
1st look at the fluid and fluid level, make sure that it is red or pink, not black, smell it and if it smells burnt, you might need to replace the tranny, due to that's a bad sign of internal damage. next I would try a junk yard for the computer and try that, finally I would go to a trusted mechanic and have them diagnose your problem, unless you have a good mechanic that will diagnose the car for around $50, then go there first, due to the complexity of the transmission.
