Question about 2006 Ford Taurus
I have a 2006 for taurus with a transverse mounted V6. I have been getting a mettallic rattling from the area around the serpentine belt, with some fluid leaking/dripping from the area near the lower pulley in the serpentine system. It's been whipping off the pulley system and onto the firewall, on the frame and the exhaust pipes, burning with a sweet smell with no smoke and making the belts squeak. I did a 'color test' by dabbing some onto a white paper towel and then 'sampling' the car's fluids but I cant tell what it is by sight or smell.
I'm looking for some suggestions as what to do - this car has 80k miles on it, and I drive 75 miles a day round trip to go to school so I can't have too much down time on it. I'm ok working on it as long as it's not too in depth - Chilton's is my bible, but they dont have one out for this model yet.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Sweet smell indicate a coolant leak, inspect all your radiator hose clamps and your water pump. The metallic rattling could be coming from a heat shield from your exhaust pipe, common for them to rattle when they go loose or one of the bolts are loose or corroded off.
Inspect all your heat shield on your exhaust pipe and your water pump and coolant hose clamps. Replace or repair any damages found.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck. Keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% again soon.

The Sweet Smell is Coolant
Most likely your going to have to replace the water pump. That will be for you to determine.
If your going to do it yourself, you'll be there a couple of days.
It maybe more than you want to do,if you need a manual,I would take it to a repair shop

Water pump, 1 day job at most shops. If you work, remember, time is money. Let a mechanic do it, you work, make money, pay mechanic, come out ahead. BETTER CHECK YOUR RADIATOR COOLANT RIGHT NOW, IT'S LOW.
