What i've done in the past when i buy used car and have no manual is purchase a floor jack and lift the rear of the car slightly enough that you can see the gas tank ..then i follow the small fuel lines leading usually down from the top of the tank one for fuel delivery and i believe the other is a vent line but one of these will lead you to a usually round cylinder type canister that can be taken off using two cresent wrenches. One is used for a back up to help hold it in position to brake it loose ...but before changing i usually release pressure in the tank by opening the gas cap, but i"ve heard a little more complicated way is to find the fuel pump fuse, pull it out, and crank the car dry ,but i dont like that idea because i dont want it to have trouble starting up incase the pump i install is bad then you will have sucked all the fuel out of the fuel rails and could take awhile to start up once the problem is corrected i wear saftey goggles and gloves and put a towel underneath to catch the fuel that will escape. installation is reverse. Can i get a rating for this answer, Thanks

Great info taylor. I just thought I would add, I have a 91 that sat for 8 years and I replaced the inline filter and pump. The filter is located at the back of the vehicle pretty much under the rear seat. I called part stores and they told me it was the driver side on the frame. If you jack the vehicle up, look for steel lines on the frame on the inside. Follow those back to where they have a rubber looking hose. This hose bends from passenger to driver side. It connects to the filter. After relieving the pressure from the line, break loose the bolts connecting the hose on both sides of the filter. Remove the lines then break loose the nut above the filter, this is what actually holds the filter tight. With out removing the nut, slide the filter towards the driver side and insert the new filter. Do this in reverse to complete!!

91 geo tracker died while driving cant get it started again

when you crank it, do you smell fuel? if you do, you're getting fuel so try replacing the distributer cap and even the plugs. if no gas smell, the fuel filter needs changing or the fuel pump is bad.

We can't get our 1991 GEO Tracker to start

I had this problem as well. The tracker had sat for 8 years and would only run off of starter fluid. I replaced the filter and fuel pump then I had no fire. Located under driver side dash in the fuse panel theres a fuse for coil. I don't remember which one, but, I am pretty sure it is a 10 amp fuse. Or just do like I did and replace any bad fuses. If that doesn't work it will be a relay located above that same fuse box.

Locate n change a fuel filter on a 1991 geo tracker

In front of the fuel tank on the passenger side mounted to the frame in the fuel line, not in the tank. Go to and you can get simple instructions on how to replace it.

1991 Geo Tracker only starts with starting fluid.

Check fuel filter on both vehicles...After that check fuel pressure ...Blocking off air flow to engine will change the fuel air mixture...air deprivation changes (lessens) air flow and fools engine into reading more fuel than is actually there. Mass air flow sensor should also be checked/cleaned if no results obtained by filter change if pressure is OK.

Hard to restart after it warms up

Have your fuel pressure checked. It sounds like you have either a fuel pump problem or your fuel filter is clogged.
