Question about 1989 Ford Mustang

2 Answers

My 1989 mustang GT's check engine light is on and it feels a little funny. like when it starts up it runs really good for about a minute then the RPM's sink sorta low and for a second i thought it was gonna die but it didn't... now the Codes are as follows... Code 13 --- "RPM out of specification during normal idle operation -or- DC motor does not follow dashpot." Code 24 --- "Air charge Tempature (act) sensor or Vane Air Tempature (VAT) sensor signal voltage is out of specification (engine off) or not at normal levels (engine running) -or- electronic distribulatorless ignition system (EDIS) fault - failure in coil 1 primary circuit Code 19 --- "Failure in electronic control assembly (ECA) problems with internal voltage regulator -or- RPM too low for EGR check during Engine run self test -or- cylinder identification (CID) sensor input failure. they all are showing during the KOEO test. (Not Running) and i just don't know what to do to get rid of these codes. i was told but i friend of mine who is also a mechanic that my Coil pack might be bad, a fellow mustang driver said my Distributor cap should be turned to adjust that but i couldn't turn it for the life of me! Can someone verify this dilema for me?!?!? I've already done/Things to know before you answer -Distributor cap -spark plug/coil wires -spark plugs -No catalytic Converters -engine was recently rebuilt but not by me -New alternator -New Wires behind dash that were recently broke and frying the other. -Air Filter Cleaned Anyone Help?!?!

Forget about the codes for now, and got to the fuel system, check the startup pressure, then the starting pressure, turn the key to run, and see if pressure drops, i think this car has a vacuum pressure regulator, and it may be bypassing the regulator into the intake via control hose, also check the egr valve, also check for injector leak if the fuel pressure drops, but i definately think the problem is fuel related, so the ecm is trying to regulate the engine so is setting off all sorts of codes, cause the problem is not electronic, when i see that many codes i figure its a mechacnical problem,

You must loosen the bolt they hold the distributor down to advance turn counter clockwise when it runs right lock it in place.clear all the codes and start over sounds like alot of them codes are from the past it may still need a coil pack ,disconnect the battery wait 3mins hook it back up and try it hope this helps

Sounds like the idle control valve. The same thing happened to my Mustang and that was my problem.

tell me parts you replaced sound like low compression or intake vacuum leak.replace all vacuum hoses, do a engine vacuum test and check compression see if engine has vacuum leak at intake manifold or worn out valves.

MY 89 Ford Mustang GT did not pass smog because then Check Engine light DOES NOT light up. Would that be a fuse or bulb?

The light is controlled directly by the computer so if your car runs, it isn't a fuse. It just needs a bulb put in it.

My 1989 ford mustang 5.0 GT failed smog because the check engine light does not work. How do I fix that?

If you bought it used someone probably disconnected the hot wire or removed the bulb in an attempt to pass inspection.

Have to push gas pedal to the floor for car to start. its an 89 gt mustang with the 5.0l. after it starts it runs fine, sometimes the engine light comes on when i get on it real hard. but there are no hard...

This would indicate a problem with the automatic choke. Putting the pedal to the floor creates the same effect as the choke when starting the car.

My 1989 Mustang LX 5.0 is idleing funny and sputtering

While it is possible, it is not probable that it is the timing chain. It is extremely rare that a timing chain would go out on a 5.0. I would look towards spark and fuel delivery in that order.

Hope this helps.

Running rough/service engine soon light

SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THE PCV VALVE MAY BE STUCK OPEN OR THE VACUUM LINE ON THE THROTTLE MAY BE SUCKING OIL INTO IT. PULL OFF THE AIR INDUCTION HOSE AND LOOK INSIDE THE THROTTLE BODY TO SEE IF THERE IS THE PRESENCE OF OIL.OPEN THE PLATE AND SPRAY GOOD CARB AND CHOKE SPRAY INSIDE WITH AN OLD TOOTHBRUSH TO CLEAN IT OUT. SOAK IT UP WITH A CLOTH RAG. WAIT A FEW MINUTES TO START CAUSE IT WILL HAVE TOO MUCH FUEL IN IT TO START. HOPE THIS HELPS. LET ME KNOW PLEASE. BEST OF LUCK.

1989 Mustang GT Keeps dying

Make sure the inside of your throttle body doesn't have a gunk build up. If so, clean in out with some carb. cleaner really well. If the crack is plugged up in the throttle body, air cannot get into the engine at idle in which the car will die. Are you running an aftermarket cam? If you are, drill a 5/32 hole in the center of the lower half of the throttle plate in the throttle body. This helps a great deal as well.
