Question about 1998 Chevrolet Suburban

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Suburban with 4x4 and over 180k miles. When I drive over a distance of 200 miles or so its starts to die out as if the fuel pump or something is going bad and the check engine light comes on. After being parked for several hours it works just fine and the check engine light goes out.Could there be a simple at home fix?

The fuel system pressure should be tested and the vehicle ran till it acts up with the pressure gauge installed. It could also be a relay overheating too, but they usually just kill the engine. What is the code that comes up when the check engine light comes on?

I had a similar problem with the Fuel pump going bad. It got hot and stopped working. It also blew the fuse when it did that,. Replacing the fuse got me another few miles until it blew again. replaced the fuel pump, all good.

My 1998 honda civic died when i was driving it. It cranks but dosn't start it also makes a noice at the beginning could it be the fuel pump?

How many miles are on it? Did you have the timing belt changed at 90,000 miles? Is there spark to the spark plugs? Do you have fuel pressure at the fuel rail? A broken timing belt will make the car sound alot different than normal when cranking.

Check for a plugged fuel filter. If that is OK, then it is probably a bad fuel pump. Once it cools down. then it starts to work again.

If no fuel is getting to the injectors replace the fuel pump relay. The engine oil sensor has a 3rd wire that sends the signal to prime the pump as you may know. When the oil pressure is reached to the normal range the computer shuts off that circuit to the oil sensor and turns on the relay to the fuel pump

Problem for GMC 1998 Suburban DIESEL DIES while

Its called the fuel pump cylinoide which is attached to the fuel pump. Unless the fuel pump is bad, you got an expensive part to buy around $2500 or the cylinoide is $900 whichever is broken. This is a know issue for GMC deisel suburbans 6.5.

there is water in the fuel, there should be a fuel water seperator in the engine compartment, look in your owners manual and it should tell you the steps to drain the water from it, it should take a few minutes

Check fuel flter at fuel pick-up intank (looks like a small wire sock). Remove fuel filter and fitting at fuel rail. Blow out fuel lines w/about 35lbs air press. Ck electrical @ relay - should be 4 connectors - one is key on hot/one is always hot/one is ground and last is hot to fuel pump. Good Luck
