Question about 1991 Volvo 740

We just replaced the break pads and the bottom bolt is frozen in the part that is for sliding, The top comes out but the pin is all worn and has a flat spot. How much trouble is it to replace the arm that holds the calipers? Joe McKenzie

That part is called a saddle. two bolts hold that item on which will come off to replace

I have a 1994 oldsmobile cutlass supreme s the break caliper makes noise when I wiggle it I've replaced the pads and bushings could the guide pin bolts be worn please help!!!


By you wiggling it then of course it will make a noise . It is a loose unit that self aligns when in operation and doesn't move like when you wiggle it. The pads are in constant contact with the disc rotor ( held off by the air flow from the spinning rotor )so the movement is very much restricted . Any problem with the rotor will move the caliper to adjust to the problem

Shakes really bad from 55 to 70 mph


First & Foremost, If Smell Of Hot Brakes, Remove One Or Both Front Tires, Use A Flash Light & Look At Both Brake Pads From The Top Side, Check For Thickness Of Pad. Remove Brake Caliper, 2-13mm Bolts, Top & Bottom, Should Slide Up & Off Of Rotor & Brake Pads, Maybe With A Little Light Prying.After Caliper Is Removed, Remember Those Two Bolts You Removed To Remove Brake Caliper, Those 2 Bolts Attached To Brake Sliders, They Should Slide In & Out Very Smoothly, If They Do Not You Will Have To Replace The Bridge (The Whole Piece Those Sliders Are Attached To, 2 Bolts On The Back Side, Will Come Right Off After Bolts Are Removed. Sometimes You Can Bring Them Back To Life By Cleaning Them Out With Carb Spray Then Compressed Air & Ceramic Silicone Grease (Purple Pack From Advanced Auto Counter) Make Sure Both Pieces Are Clean Before Placing Back Together. If They Are Stuck Inside Bridge Piece I Suggest Replace Caliper Mount Or Bridge. (Some Parts Stores Call It Different Names) When Doing A Brake Job Always Check Your Caliper Release Pins & Make Sure They Slide Easily, If The Caliper Does Not Return That Could Be The Smell Of Overheating Brake Pads & Vibration, Also, Your Caliper Will Not Return & Will Wear Top Or Bottom Side Of Pad Very Badly. Good Luck! Probably A Good Idea While You Have It Up On Jack Stands To Pull Up On Bottom Of Tire & Feel If There Is Any Play Or Movement Up & Down, Should Be No Movement, If There Is Movement Your Lower Or Upper Ball joint Could Be Excessively Worn, Should Be Replaced & Realigned.

How to change brake pad and check rotors


Brake Pads Removal & Installation Front for_car_toy_cam_02-04_sst_frt_dsc_asm.gif

To Remove:
  1. Drain brake fluid to ½ full level in reservoir.
  2. Remove the front wheels. toy_car_cam_frontbrakepads.gif

  3. Remove the front brake caliper assembly.
  4. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each of the 2 brake pads.
  5. Remove the wear indicator from each of the 2 brake pads.
To Install:
NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.

  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press piston into the caliper.
  2. Apply disc brake grease to the inside of each anti-squeal shim.
  3. Install the anti-squeal shims on each pad.
  4. Install the pad wear indicator clip to the pads.
  5. Install the pads with the pad wear indicator plate facing upward.
  6. Install the brake caliper with the 2 mounting bolts. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  7. Install the front wheels.
  8. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  9. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.

To Remove:

  4. Remove the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  5. Remove the rear brake calipers.
  6. Remove the 2 brake pads with the anti-squeal shims.
  7. Remove the anti-squeal shims and pad wear indicators from brake pads.
To Install:
  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press the piston into the caliper.
  2. Coat both sides of the outer anti-squeal shim with pad grease.
  3. Install anti-squeal shims to each pad.
  4. Install wear indicators on the 2 brake pads.
  5. Install the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  6. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  7. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  9. Install the rear wheels.

  1. Remove the front wheels.
  2. Remove the front brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the front brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the front wheel disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the front disc.
  2. Install the brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bolts 79 ft-lb (107 Nm).
  3. Install the brake caliper. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the front wheel.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the rear disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the rear disc.
  2. Install the rear brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bracket bolts as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the bracket bolt 46 ft-lb (61.8 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the bracket bolt 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  3. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 32 ft-lb (43 Nm)
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the rear wheel

Removing breaks from a 2000 Hyundai Accent


hi from uk the 17mm bolts you mention do not remove as these secure the caliper carrier and only need removing to facilitate disc/rotor renewal to remove caliper only if you check the rear of caliper you will see two 13mm blts top and bottom of caliper these bolts pass thro conveluted rubber boots into slide pins bolts screw into these pins and the caliper is what is known as floating caliper this means only one piston operation on caliper then caliper slides on pins tou operate both pads when brakes applied so remove the two bolts and the steel spring on front face of caliper ?(remember how it fits !) then caliper slides off the rotor leaving pads in place on the carrier you then prise out pads/wirebrush carrier points where new pads are to fit then push caliper piston back then refit caliper in reverse order ADVICE= before refitting caliper smear alittle copper grease on rear metal side of each pad this prevents squeeling of pads when braking also pull out the to pins mentioned above that fit into carrier top/bottom wipe clean and put /smear copper grease on these too then refit and push in till rubber boots reseat on the carrier lips ? when you have done both sides brakes bleed calipers this is a must ! and when you do you will see dirty fluid emmited on the fist couple of pumps on b/pedal then clean fluid ? this WILL improve b/pedal travel and more positive ? the dirty fluid is o/heated /burnt fluid which becomes compressable giving soft pedal when operated and is due to heat transfer from disc/pads over time and is conducted thro caliper piston to fluid that is why it is recommended you bleed/flush hydraulics at least 2year intervals hope the above helps you and understandable best wishes from uk

You are correct. The pad has worn down to the steel backing pad, and now you will have to replace your brake rotor as well.

A few hunderd possible causes - sticking pistons, frozen slide pins, loose pads, worn pads, offset/loose/missing bolts - caliper, worn hub bearing, defective master cylinder, malfunction in the master cylinder vacuum boost bellows. Anybody's guess

I have a 2000 Passat and going to have my friend replace the rotors and breaks. I am preparing to fix it but want to know what sizes are the bolts for the calipers sliding pins. If you know the Bolt s


For a wrench or for the acctual bolt size.
To remove front pads..you need 8mm allen socket to pull the caliper guide pins, then 17 or 18mm..To remove rear pads...you need 13mm socket for lock bolt on guide pins and 15mm open end wrench (thin section to hold guide pin while you remove lock bolts..I ground down a spare wrench). You DO NOT have to remove rear carriers to change rotors..just remove lock screw and angle rotor out. The B5 Passats don't have the electronic parking brake so you don't need VAG Com to change pads.
Installation tips:
Clean and regrease the guide pins with "synthetic caliper grease"
Rear lock bolts come with preapplied thread locker and "are not to be reused"..I just wire brush the threads and use some Loctite Blue on em. I smear just a little antisieze on the inside bore of the rotors and on the lock screw threads to prevent corrosion and make next rotor change ez. Torques:
Front caliper guide pins:18 ft lb
Front carrier bolts: 89 ft lb
Rear guide pin lock bolts:26 ft lb
Wheel lugs: 89 ft lb

The top bolt that holds the caliper on looks to need a special tool the bottom is just a socket what takes off the top bolt on the rear?


Hi the top is not a bolt its a pin
to remove the caliper remove the lower bolt then lift the caliper up till it clears the brake pads and slide the caliper off the pin
when you reinstall lube the top pin and the bottom slide pin
TAKE CARE WHEN REMOVING THE LOWER BOLT THEY BREAK EASY

15-INCH TYPE

  1. Lift-up the vehicle, and remove the front wheels.

  1. Remove the caliper body and the support from housing, and suspend it from strut using a wire.

  1. Remove the disc rotor. NOTE: If the disc rotor seizes up within hub, drive the disc rotor out by pushing with an 8 mm bolt in holes B on the rotor.
  2. Clean mud and foreign particles from the caliper body assembly and the support. 16-INCH TYPE Refer to 15-inch type. 17-INCH TYPE Refer to 15-inch type.
INSTALLATION

  1. Install the disc rotor.
  2. Install the caliper body and the support to housing. Tightening torque: 80 Nm (8.2 kgf-m, 59 ft. lbs.)
  3. Install the front wheels.

2003 Ford E250 Remove/replace front brake pads


You will have to take the wheel off, then try to use a latge screw driver to pry between the old pads and the rotor to push the old pads back some, this will allow you to remove the caliper easier later. Next get a T-45 socket and remove both the top and bottom bolts from the back of the caliper. Tilt the brake caliper at the top or the bottom (it different for both side), and slide it off. Then you can just remove the pads. Be careful to notice that the shims on the caliper slide are different from top to bottom, don't mix them up. Pull the caliper slide pins out and inspect the boot for hole or cracks and the pins for rust, replace if any of these condition exist. Use some brake silicone grease to lube the slide pins and put a little into each boot and put the slide pins back in. Check the rubber boots on the caliper pistions to make sure they are not leaking any fluid or ripped. Use one of the old brake pads and a C-clamp to push both pistons on one caliper back in until they are flush. Check to make sure that no fluid leaked out of the caliper pistons while they were being pushed back in. If you want to do what is call a pad slap only then you can install that pads at this time but that is not recommended. It is recommened that you measure, check and turn the rotors if at all possible or replace them, the wheel seals and check and repack the wheel bearings.
