Question about 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

2002 Suburban; always had battery draining issues; alternator and battery replaced. Today, battery light came on while driving; then all controls--windows, too---stopped working. Any ideas?

A short finder which is an ossolator will find the short quickly or disconnect one fuse every night until you have no battery drainage no longer

Wow that sucks..check the other small ground wire that leads to the negative post on your battery..That wire should be used as the ground for the inside controls.. this problem happened in my Toyota 4Runner, so it might not be the same problem as yours..Good Luck

More than likely your alternator is bad and not keeping the battery charged up, plus you may have an electrical draw somewhere in the vehicle draining the battery also. I would check out the alternator first. Good luck.

Why is my 1995 suburban keep draining the battery? battery is charged ,alternator is fine , no interior lights are left on what else should i check?


a defective diode in the alternator can do this, the alternator will test good, also map lights can be left on and most don't see that, check that

While driving my engine stalls and the stereo pops what could it be?


Sounds like you have the first symptoms of a bad alternator, or possibly a dead cell in your battery. If it is the alternator it will for sure leave you stranded. Most Auto parts today can check your alternator for free. Alternators that have to put out a lot of amps due to aftermarket lights or added power accesories such as big stereo amps do not last long because they have to continuously charge the battery from the extra drain.

1995 Suburban Electrical: Battery is being drained.


The alternator is usually the culprit when nothing else has been modified. However yo mentioned changing it. (actually the regulator inside the alternator usually fails and drains the bat when the engine is off) However there is a very common issue with mid 90's gm trucks, the brake switched go bad and cause the brake lights to stay on. Try lightly touching the brake pedal and see the lights go off after slowly releasing it. the fix is a new switch that fairly easy to replace . These are mounted on the brake pedal arm just above your foot.

Aside from these two issues, you will need to trace the problem to its source by taking items out of service one at a time by removing fuses. not that the engine computer and the radio will always draw power at start up and a tiny clock current thereafter. But there should not be anything else. The voltage guage is not very accurate in the dash. Use a volt meter to watch voltages unplug fuses until the voltage goes up. without the vehicle running, voltage should be between 11 and 12 volts on a charged battery.

And finally, check the grounding. There should be a ground strap between the engine and vehical body in addition to the battery cable. If this is broken or missing it will cause errant readings of voltage in the dash.
