There is a SHORT in the Alternater, This HEAT is Caused By RESISTANCE and Without the Engine even Running It Being HOT INDICATES An INTERNAL FAILURE. Remove the ALTERNATER Have it BENCH TESTED and Replace Alternater to Correct this Problem.I am Confident this is the problem.

What would cause the alternator to run hot on a 1949 farmall cub tractor

Sounds like your still running power thru the original regulator also. Disconnect the original system completely so that your running power directly from alternator's inboard regulator and to the battery. Nowhere else.

1996 cadillac eldorado new battery new alternator still wont charge

Hey Jeff. Never assume that "new" alternator is good, but lets assume it is.The actuator wire that goes into the field of the alternator HAS to be hot with the key in run position. (both wires will be). If not, it wont charge. If those two are hot with the key on, the alternator is bad.

Changed the alternator and it's running very hot

Someway, somehow, you must have brushed against the wire which makes your Electric Radiator cooling fan work. There is also a sensor on the engine and the wire may be off.

I have a 1988 Ford F 250 that will not charge the battery, I have replaced the battery and the alt.

at the alternantor you should have a small hot wire from ignition call the alternator energize wire, this wire has to be hot to tell the alternator to charge. run a hot wire to alt and check charging.

Hot alternator

Hi,
There are 3 reasons this will be happening:
  1. There is a massive amount of current draw from the battery which is causing the alternator to run at a constant maximum charge rate. So look for any equipment you may have running on your truck - e.g large stereo system/amplifiers that they are not putting too much load on the battery.
  2. If you have and external regulator then the regulator needs to be replaced as it is causing the alternator to charge at maximum output.
  3. Make sure that if it is close to an exhaust manifold that the heat shield is back in place, heat coming from the exhaust manifold can also cause this problem.
Hope this helps you out, let me know how you get on.

Alternator runs very hot. the longer it runs, the less the output voltage. battery is ok, been doing this for months. Help!

ALTERNATORS GET A LITTLE HOT THEY CAN GET UP TO 140 DEGREES THEY HAVE LEAD IN THEM TO PROTECT FROM HEAT DAMAGE.BECAUSE ENGINE CAN GET UP 200 DEGREES.BUT IF YOUR ALTERNATOR OUT PUT IS 13.5 TO 14.5 VOLTS ITS WORKING OKAY.IF YOUR VOLTAGE OUT PUT IS 12.0 TO 11.0 VOLTS VOLTAGE REGULATOR IN ALTERNATOR IS GONE.

is your belt slipping? You may have a bad tensioner pulley. Check all pulleys make sure they will spin and not lock up, if they feel really tight or after rotating them around several times they get tight replace

Alternator running very hot.

when you replace a alternator make sure battery is fully charged 1275 hydrometer reading on all cells. alternators will get hot. if you purchased from a cheap auto parts store with the lifetime warranty youll find out you purchased a life time of changing substandard parts (and they only replace 3 times)i would suggest you take it to a local rebuilder (whole vechicle) and have tested
