Question about Dodge Caravan

2 Answers

I have 2002 caravan. The transmission will not go into gear properly. If it is put into drive thru 1 it will occasionally go into first and you can move the van. It will quickly "pop" out of gear after about 50 yards. This problem is accompanied by a whining noise until it does go in gear, then it quiets down until it pops out again. I have changed the solenoid pack as recommended. I have not yet changed the TCM. While changing the solenoid, I disconnected the cooling line, but nothing came out. I don't know if this is typical, or is this indicative of an internal pump issue. I also get a P0700 code when toggling the ignition. Any suggestions? Darryl

I'd start next with hydraulic testing
here are the tests from Chrysler...

TEST ONE-SELECTOR IN LOW (1st GEAR)
Attach pressure gauge to the low/reverse clutch tap.
Move selector lever to the (L) position.
Allow vehicle wheels to turn and increase throttle opening to achieve an indicated vehicle speed to 20 mph.
Low/reverse clutch pressure should read 115 to 145 psi.
This test checks pump output, pressure regulation and condition of the low/reverse clutch hydraulic circuit and shift schedule.

TEST TWO-SELECTOR IN DRIVE (2nd GEAR)
NOTE:This test checks the underdrive clutch hydraulic circuit as well as the shift schedule.
Attach gauge to the underdrive clutch tap.
Move selector lever to the 3 position.
Allow vehicle wheels to turn and increase throttle opening to achieve an indicated vehicle speed of 30 mph.
In second gear the underdrive clutch pressure should read 110 to 145 psi.

TEST TWO A-SELECTOR IN OD (4th Gear)
NOTE:This test checks the underdrive clutch hydraulic circuit as well as the shift schedule.
Attach gauge to the underdrive clutch tap.
Move selector lever to the (OD) position.
Allow wheels to rotate freely and increase throttle opening to achieve an indicated speed of 40 mph.
Underdrive clutch pressure should read below 5 psi. If not, then either the solenoid assembly or TCM is at fault.

TEST THREE-OVERDRIVE CLUTCH CHECK (3rd and 2nd Gear)
Attach gauge to the overdrive clutch tap.
Move selector lever to the (OD) position.
Allow vehicle wheels to turn and increase throttle opening to achieve an indicated vehicle speed of 20 mph. Vehicle should be in 3rd gear.
Overdrive clutch pressure should read 74 to 95 psi.
Move selector lever to the (3) position and increase indicated vehicle speed to 30 mph.
The vehicle should be in second gear and overdrive clutch pressure should be less than 5 psi.
This test checks the overdrive clutch hydraulic circuit as well as the shift schedule.

TEST FOUR-SELECTOR IN OVERDRIVE (4th Gear)
Attach gauge to the 2/4 clutch tap.
Move selector lever to the (OD) position.
Allow vehicle front wheels to turn and increase throttle opening to achieve an indicated vehicle speed of 30 mph. Vehicle should be in 4th gear.
The 2/4 clutch pressure should read 75 to 95 psi.
This test checks the 2/4 clutch hydraulic circuit.

TEST FIVE-SELECTOR IN OVERDRIVE (4th Gear-CC on) Attach gauge to the torque converter clutch off pressure tap.
Move selector lever to the (OD) position.
CAUTION:Both wheels must turn at the same speed.
Allow vehicle wheels to turn and increase throttle opening to achieve an indicated vehicle speed of 50 mph. Vehicle should be in 4th gear, CC on.
Torque converter clutch off pressure should be less than 5 psi. This test checks the torque converter clutch hydraulic circuit.

TEST SIX-SELECTOR IN REVERSE
Attach gauges to the reverse and LR clutch tap.
Move selector lever to the (R) position.
Read reverse clutch pressure with output stationary (foot on brake) and throttle opened to achieve 1500 rpm.
Reverse and LR clutch pressure should read 165 to 235 psi.
This test checks the reverse clutch hydraulic circuit.

If proper line pressure is found in any one test, the pump and pressure regulator are working properly.

Low pressure in all positions indicates a defective pump, a clogged filter, or a stuck pressure regulator valve.

Clutch circuit leaks are indicated if pressures do not fall within the specified pressure range.

If the overdrive clutch pressure is greater than 5 psi in Step 4 of Test Three, a worn reaction shaft seal ring or a defective solenoid assembly is indicated.

If the underdrive clutch pressure is greater than 5 psi in Step 4 of Test Two A, a defective solenoid assembly or TCM is the cause.

Have a tranny shop test drive this, but I will be willing to bet you just have a transmission that is in need of a rebuild. Don't install a transmission until it is properly diagnosed by a transmission shop expert.

1996 dodge grand caravan shifts down into first when coming to a stop. After it has been drivin for a min.Stays in first gear after it slams into first from second.

It's actually putting itself into second gear. Chrysler A-604 transmissions are an electronically controlled transmission which use speed sensor to see things like vehicle speed, engine rpm, throttle position and internal transmission component speeds. It can determine if there is an issue with the transmission based on these sensors and when it does it tells the transmission to go into "limp mode" which is basically just second gear. This would allow the driver to move off the highway to the side of the road or drive it slowly for a while to a service facility. To determine the exact issue with the transmission you need to go to a shop that can read the transmission codes and decipher whether the transmission can be repaired in the vehicle or must be removed and rebuilt. It is common to have a sensor fail and cause this issue which means a reasonably low cost repair. It is also common for the trans to need complete overhaul. It IS worth it to go to a "qualified" transmission repair garage though so it can be properly diagnosed.

Good luck and hope this helps.

P.S. Did you check the fluid level first, idling in park? Had to ask.

Dodge caravan dies when in gear

Vacuum leaks. ( hissing noise around the engine). Tune up (plugs and wires). clean the throttle body(inside of it). All these can cause rough idle. The dieing can be from transmission problems. Can you rev the van up and keep it running while in gear? Or does it die then too? You can replace the solenoid pack on the outside of the transmission for around $250, if you do it yourself. If you do this, DO NOT get any dirt in the holes of the transmission where the solenoid pack sets. Clean it well before you remove the old pack.

Sounds like there is a problem with the Torque converter in the transmission or Transmission itself. When you put it in gear it should initially go into neutral but occasionally the transmission will stick part way in gear and partially in neutral putting a load on the motor. It is not enough of a load to get the vehicle moving but it is enough to stall the motor. This could be a simple clutch adjustment in the Automatic clutch to a PCV valve issue to a need to rebuild the whole transmission because of a problem with the control body or transmission pump itself. Sorry for the bad news.

My 2002 Dodge Caravan SE (2.4L) doesn't want to kick into gears

Automatic transmissions can fail at any mileage. First thing you need to do is check the fluid level, make sure the transmission is full, also check the condition of the fluid, burnt odor, strong varnish smell, or signs of contamination. If the level is correct, and the fluid is red in color, without any strong odors, you may have some type of valvebody issue, however, given my experience, these transmissions are prone for failure around this mileage.

You have to use ATF4 transmission fluid for the dodge caravan. If you changed the fluid and the filter, a quick relearn has to be performed by a technician. It requires a special computer device. Hope this helps.

Reverse gear problem

Change the Transmission filter and flush the fluid in it, I'd be willing to be the factory filter is still in these trannys and it's about clogged up, gettin worse once the fluid heats up. The pump won't build enough pressure to allow it to act properly.
