Question about 1998 Kia Sportage

1 Answer

My 1998 Kia Sportage dies when I try to give it gas. Unless I leave it in gear and keep it revved up while stopped, it will die on me. It is very scary to be even on a slight incline at a stop sign or light when cars pull up right behind me because I am not sure if I will be able to get it to go before it starts to roll backwards. When it was really damp and humid one day it would hardly stay running at all. We have changed spark plugs and wires, air filter and a number of other maintenance items recently but it doesn't seem to get any better. It has no get up and go at all and even on the highway, the slightest incline makes it slow way down. I am not sure what to do.

Sounds like the idle air control motor ( IAC )

You'll need a scan tool to monitor fuel trims and IAC %

if IAC % is high then the IAC is dead or plugged
if IAC % is low, then you have a vacuum leak

HOLD keeps coming on in my 99 kia sportage what does that mean

Look on the shifter lever, just bellow the push button. There is another push button there. That's the one you press or depress to keep the transmission on 3rd. gear. Just press it again and the hold light should come off.

When first started, the Kia spits and sputters.

The hold light is on because the button on the left side of the gear selector is depressed. this causes the car to start off in second and doesnt go past third. This information is in your owners maual.
