I have a 1998 gmc sonoma and when I turn the key over to start it, the automatic headlights go off and it won't start. What does this mean?

probably a bad battery
there is enough volts (12 volts)to run the lights but when the starter is engaged ( 500amps+ 7 volts ) the battery dies out and the lights fail
have a load test done on the battery to check the cell condition

Hello ,
The area you need to check ( check owners manual) is most likely this is two issues that could be. It could be your fuel pump relay , that is what triggers your fuel pump to work.Or your fuel pump itself. However first thing I would check is your fuel pump relay, which is normally square like fuse, check fuse box area, or sometimes it is under hood near firewall in a box, with other fuse relays. Thanks Mike

Tilt the steering wheel down all the way and see if it starts, if it does then there is a main power wire loose in the steering columb. Thats all which comes to my mind at this time.

With a voltmeter or test light can you check for power at the fuse block? There should be power to some of the fuses like ignition or radio, cigarette lighter. If not then check directly at battery. Some cars have fusible links between the battery and all loads, I don't know yours.

01 Sonoma 2.2 M/T - new starter, relay - hard to start with 13v on new battery - starts everytime with 17v on a charger

Check if the cable connecting the battery are clean and tight, check that this tight the negative cable on the engine as the positive lead going to the starter because if there are loose good contact and is difficult to start. Thanks

Try another starter and also try turning the crank bolt with a ratchet and socket to make sure that the crank isn't frozen in place. Do not leave the keys in the car when doing so. You don't want anyone messing around in the truck when trying that!
