might need to replace your transmission fluid, depending on how many miles are on the car, if over 80,000 i suggest a change

Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Make sure the level is correct, if it is then it may be time for the transmission for service. The transmission service time is every 30,000 miles, and if it has not been serviced the Transmission line pressure solenoid could be gummed up with dirt. Have the transmission fluid flush and the transmission oil filter replaced and hope that helps. Hard shifting is a sign of fluid restriction in the valve body in the transmission and will lead to a costly transmission failure. Good luck and keep me posted, the other thing to that would give you a hard shift is a bad throttle position sensor. But that should have given a check engine or service engine light on. 

It sounds like the fluid level is not set correctly, causing the valve body to take air and miscalculate the shift. I would take the vehicle back to the installer and ask them to go on a test drive with you to verify the issue. Only then can they correct the problem. Is your check engine lamp on?

A reason for hard shifting could be a problem with many things with various degrees of seriousness. It could be your ATF( automatic transmission fluid) is low or broken down and old. This would cause the hardness and the reason for stop and go traffic effecting it. Another possibility is your transmission is just shot, and the timing gears inside are worn and not properly shifting at the correct RPM causing a **** during shifting.

Have you had your throttle position sensor checked out? It'll cause a harsh and/or delayed shift from first to second. Second thing to check out is your PCM, as it controls the shifting of your transmission.
