You probably need a fuel pump if you don't hear it run when you turn the key. Try having someone bang on the gas tank under the car with a baseball bat while you try and start it. Sometimes the vibration wakes up a failing pump one or two more times before it's really dead and gone.

How do I know if my fuel pump is gone

Here is a quick test: Turn the keys so that the car is "on" but don't turn it that the engine crank. You should be able to hear a "buzzing" sound coming from the fuel tank for a few seconds each time you turn the keys to ON. The sound you hear is the fuel pump priming the engine.
If you don't hear any sound at all, it is an indication the fuel pump is not running. Check the fuse before changing out the pump.

Another indication is if you start and the car seems to start but then engine stalls. Even if you apply the gas, the engine still stalls, this indicate lack of fuel coming in due to fuel pump not working.

Car won' start, battery is ok, antifreeze is low but not out could this be the problem?

No. it wouldn't keep it from starting. If the engine cranks but won't start, probably gas or spark (ignition) related. Do you hear the fuel pump in the tank turn on for a couple of seconds, when turning key to on, not start? If you cannot hear the pump, better check if you are getting gas up to the engine. Maybe the fuel pump quit, or the pump circuit needs looked at. The pump should briefly turn on with key on to pressurize the fuel system-the fuel line and the fuel rail where the injectors are. Then the pump will turn off, and only come back on again when the engine is cranking, and stay on when running.
Correct fuel pressure is important for easy starting, and good engine performance. Have the fuel pressure checked against the specification for your vehicle. If fuel pressure is good, check the ignition system-check for spark.

Van will not start

Can you hear the whine of the fuel pump with key-on, engine-off? You should hear this whine correspond with the fuel pump relay, located in the relay centre under the hood. It should run for about 3 seconds and then turn off. Of course, this is just the first preliminary step to trouble shoot a no-start condition. Checking for fuel, spark and spark at the right time, are always the first things to be certain of, before you can go any further. Just a note: GM products will only cycle the fuel pump once for every key-on, engine-off cycle. You will need to crank the engine and then turn off the key to reset the pump relay.

2000 mercury grand marquis 4.6 Intermittent problem. 35,000. miles. Problem engine died several times wile driving. Also after car is parked from a drive will not start. Found that the fuel pump is not...

I'd have to test when problem is ongoing. When you first turn on key, no crank, you should hear the pump run for a few seconds then stop. For initial prime, the computer doesn't need rpm signal. Engine cranking, the computer needs to see rpm signal or it won't ground the fuel pump relay. W/o rpm signal, no spark at the plugs and no fuel injector pulse. I know your talking about fuel, but, when problem is ongoing, check spark and fuel injector pulse, engine cranking.
Intermittent problems are a pain, have to test when problem is ongoing.

Not getting fuel to engine

i would start by getting somebody to cycle the key on and off while you listen to hear if the fuel pump is turning on or not. (when the key is turned on the fuel pump will turn on and you should hear it start up and then turn off.) if you can hear the fuel pump come on then i would check to see if the fuel filter is plugged. if you cannot hear the fuel pump you should check your fuses. if all the fuses are good then get a rubber mallot and bang on the bottom of the gas tank. the vibrations usually will get a fuel pump to start up again and your car should start up.(if it fires up after banging on the gas tank, you will need to replace the fuel pump. the banging on the gas tank only works a couple of times. enough to get you home or to a shop to replace.)

Engine turns over but does not start. I poured

Either a bad fuel pump or fuel pump relay. Take off the gass cap, have someone listen where the gas cap goes. When you turn the key to the on position you should hear the fuel pump run. If not, find the relay under the hood. Swap the relay with the one next to it (temporarily) Turn the key off then back on. If you hear the fuel pump running then replace the relay. If not the fuel pump is bad. Which is usually the problem.

1997GMC Sonoma 4x4 engine cranks but wont start

sounds like a fuel pump problem. take off gas cap and have someone sit in the truck and turn iginition key to on. (do not turn key as if you were starting but to "on only") you should hear the fuel pump engage. if you dont hear the fuel pump then check the fuel pump relay. it is located behind the glove compartment. hope this helps...

92 honda civic turns over fine but doesnt start

ok, this is a commom problem with this 92 hondas,

it may be the pump fuel relay, which is under the dash on the driver side by the fuse panel.

here is a way to determine that.

when you turn the key on the on position

do you hear the fuel pump running while the engine light is on, and does the pump stop running afteer the engine light goes off?

if you do hear the pump running then it means that fuel pump is working fine ( since it way just replaced), but if you don't hear it running while the check engine light is on ( about 2 seconds) chances are the fuel pump relay is not working as it should.

also there are clicks that have to be heard on the starting process.

1 when you turn key to on possition

2 when the check engine light goes off( a click has to be heard just after it goes off)

3 after the car starts

If you don't hear this clicks, try to get your ear close the location of the fuel pump relay( near the fuse panel under the dash).

the fuse relay is just a bunch of circuits soldered, so you can get it to someone who knows how to solder and fix it.

or just get a replacement one at any junkyard. ( cheapp)
