Question about 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab

97 dodge ram no spark

97 dodge ram, first was stalling couple time week, Last day it was drove stalled 3 times had to wait couple hours, cranked up and would run maybe 1 mile to 5 mile cut off again. Have replaced coil,wire,spark plugs, and distributor cap that was loose on the right side, rotor button. clean the throttle body. Now the truck will not start at all. checked and there is not fire to the plug wires?

Then i would replace whats called the hall effect sensor its that black plastic plate you see when you take dist cap off. just pull rotor and lift up the sensor.dist cap is what holds it on.also under the sensor will be a stamped sheet metal piece that looks like the top of a castle wall. make sure its not loose on the shaft.if it is then new dist will be needed

    well make sure timing chain isnt broke

    unplug coil 12 volt leads and check to see if 12v is present with key on or that may have to be cranked to check if no 12v then try switching the asd relay with the horn relay to see if relay is bad

    check ALL fuses because some fuses feed other fuses and are not labeled as such on the fuse box.

    the computer controls the spark based on cam and crank sensors without either of those signals no spark can happen.

    it adjusts spark based on all the other sensors input but if they are bad spark will still occur

    how the coil fires is 12v+ is supplied by the ignition switch through the asd relay and a fuse.the 12v- side is turned on and off by the computer based on cam and crank signals. when the 12v- is switched off a spark occurs.the ignition switches on those trucks like to get hot and burn terminals.remove the plastic shroud from the colomn, its easy just 3 or 4 srews from under column.unplug switch and look at switch terminals and plug terminals if any haet damge replace switch and remove the individual terms. from plug and splice in new ones.the dealer should have the pigtails because there was a recall on them for burning from high park light loads.check to see if yours was covered and done on the recall.i have seen the switches burn even after the recall so just because it was done dont mean nothing check it anyway

Could be crankshaft position sensor ! after a crank sensor is replaced it needs to have a relearn done , Dealer or some other independent repair shop . Take it an have it checked out , unless you have a factory scan tool or a professional type scan tool .

Greg, I read your complete message, but nowhere did I see that you replaced the Cam Sensor. The EGR will cause it to stall at stops but usually will not prevent it from restarting. Car stalls, starts up then stalls again, starts up and stalls again


This could have several problems. #1 Fuel pressure due freezing water in fuel lines add thermal aid or rubbing alcohol . If you have access to a pressure gauge there is a service fitting on fuel rail that you can test pressure while driving and see if the pressure is gone when car dies this could lead to fuel pump electrical or more restricted lines. #2 intermittent sensor failure Mopar uses 2 sensors to control spark and fuel lose one could lose spark lose the other lose injection with a scanner they call it C/C sync ok (cam/crank) if no then check for each parameters for display.# 3 relay controls ASD and FUEL pump for voltage drops.

Engine stalls while driving


That would be a symptom of a crankshaft postion sensor going bad . Shorting out when heated up . But unfortunately thier are other sensors that can cause the same problem . Plus the ICM - ignition control module could cause that problem as well . OH yea , almost forgot you vehicle has two crankshaft position sensors . You best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop that has the diagnostic tools to trouble shoot the problem .
The electronic ignition (EI) system consists of the following components and wiring circuits:
• The ignition control (IC) module
• The ignition coils
• The powertrain control module (PCM)
• The 24X crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
• The 7X CKP sensor
• The camshaft position (CMP) sensor
The EI wiring circuits listed here use the following service common names. Between the IC module and the PCM:
• Low resolution engine speed signal
• IC timing control
• IC timing signal
• Low reference
Between the 7X CKP sensor and the IC module:
• CKP sensor (1) signal
• Low reference
Between the 24X CKP sensor and the PCM:
• Medium resolution engine speed signal
• 12-volt reference
• Low reference
Between the CMP and the PCM:
• CMP sensor signal
• Low reference
• 12-volt reference
The IC module also receives power and chassis ground through the following circuits:
• Ignition (1) voltage
• Ground

When it stalls check for spark , pull spark plug wires off the same coil an crank the engine . Is thier spark jumping from one coil tower to the other ? Make sure it's a lack of spark problem .

This is usually the crank position sensor...some parts shops can help you with the location...hope this helps:) This should keep you from being stranded...

mcdevito75 Here, It"s possible the ignition Module is going bad, no way to test and if so, one day the car will not start at all.----------It can also be a vapor loc, wher the fuel is evaporating before it reaches the cylinders. Best Bet, have your local shop check both these items.

1995 Dodge Ram 1500 stalled after it was running. Now wont start


Did you do any turn up lately. Was it rain or just cold outside. If yes you might need to check/replace spark plugs/wires, distributor cap. Simple solution for cheking that just worm up with hair dryer for 5-10 minutes.If helps look the problem where.
If wont help check the fuel pump, fuel filter.
