Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

It seems ike its not getting spark it cranks over but not starting i put a new fuel pump in it and still nothing?

    ok ya im gettin gas i spraid starting fluid in it and nothin happend. changed the coil packs on it and wires on it about say 5 to 6 mnths ago. dou think it could be my igntion module or crank shaft sensor. ive put so much money in this car its no even funny i just want it back on the road for good lol..

    ok ya it did this befor the pump wentout but now when i spray startin fluied in it dont start but i keep dumping money in this pos i just want to get it runnin u know.. how much think he chain will cost and the cam sensor.

    ok ya it sounds the same nd all soo i dont think its the chain but weres the control module at. is it in the dash under the steering wheel. right these newer cars and all are a big pain in the ass.. and wats the crankshaft sensor for

I would use a spark test, or put a long screwdriver in the spark plug boot and touch it to ground, to check for any spark. Are you getting fuel now? Also, check your fuses.

    Auto Zone can test your control module, instead of having to buy one, not knowing for sure if that will fix it. If that tests out ok, I would suspect the crankshaft sensor. I would also make sure you don't have a bad timing chain. When it turns over now, does it sound like before you had this problem? I had a Cavalier that the timing chain tensioner went out, the motor jumped time, and bent the valves.

    The timing chain set, with tensioner, $100, crankshaft sensor $68.00. I wouldn't worry a whole lot about the timing chain, if the motor sounds the same as before when you crank it over. I just try to list everything I can think of. I would have the control module tested, it's a bit of a pain to get to. You can pull out the plugs and crank the motor and see if the cylinders have compression. It's a neverending battle with cars these days, there are so many more parts that can go bad.

    The ignition control module is mounted on a bracket under the coil packs, which is mounted on the back side of the motor, underneath the intake manifold. The crank sensor tells the computer where the crankshaft is in relationship to top dead center. I can't quite remember the location of the crankshaft sensor, I think it maybe on the back side of the motor too.

You seem to of covered most bases but are all of the things (air/ gas/ spark getting to the engine at the right time in the right amounts. FUEL PRESSURE? FUEL INJECTORS FIRING AT THE RIGHT TIME? SPARKING ? AT THE RIGHT TIME? PROPER AIR INTAKE (EMISSIONS?) You have may have to look into cam & crank sensors.

check your crankshaft position sensor. fuel+spark+compression+timing=ignition.

I have a 98 Camaro I put a fuel pump in fuel filter an my car still won't start.Do thank the gas line clog up?

If you know for a fact the pump is getting power and ground, and nothing is coming out of the line before the filter, then yes the line could be clogged up.

Have you ever heard of testing before replacing parts ? Fuel pressure an flow tesing , testing the electrical circuit for the fuel pump , amp draw testing , voltage drop testing etc... Why won't my 1997 Saturn SL start?

you have spark at the plugs ..thats something

spray stay you mug
into the throttle body see if the motor will cough

tank needs draining and have fresh fuel
fuel pump has a filter and fuel relay

crack the fuel line connection to the rail to see if there is fuel reaching the rail and correct pressure

if sitting 6 years.. not being run regularly
do a compression test
lifters may be stuck
rings may have lost tension

Wont start it cranks but nothing happens.wont turn over. put a new what you would call distributor. still nothing.

If the Starter isn't turning the engine over, but you hear a clicking sound, you may have a bad Starter.
If the Starter is turning the engine over, but you are getting no Spark, you may have a failed Camshaft or Crankshaft Position Sensor, or your Timing Belt may have jumped or broken(common on the neons).
If the Starter is turning the engine over, but you are getting Spark, you may have a failed fuel pump, fuel pump relay, or fuel pressure regulator.

Before you start replacing sensor, double check the Timing belt to ensure it hasn't broken or jumped, and check to see if you are getting a spark or not.
