False test results on charging system test? How accurate are those tests they do at auto parts stores on your charging system while the car is running? The kid at Advance says my alternator is "boarderline". Could that be caused by a slipping belt? It's had a squeal for about a week that started immediatley as I ran through about 8 inches of water, so I've been thinking that the water did something to the belt. It was still squealing when it was tested yesterday but suddenly stopped squealing this afternoon. Do you think there's a chance that I can tell Advance to keep their $214 alternator now that mine isn't squealing or will doing that just put me broken down on the side of the road some day soon? 2007 Taurus V-6 with 61,000 miles. Your belt squeeling does not mean it is slipping. If it was slipping you would have more problems then just your alternator, It would get hard to steer too. The test he did was a voltage test and yes the voltage test is a good thing if your alternator is borderline that could mean you have 3 months til its bad or 3 days who knows. You could also check on a remanufactured alternator. Just because u ordered it already does not mean u have to pay for it. Squeeking belt is just a worn belt your lookin at maybe 20-25 dollars to replace that. You might as well replace that since your going to have it off anyways, would be perfect time. good luck hope you just put the alternator in because its worth $200 to not be stranded and have to buy one anyways.

Engine keeps shutting off

Have you had the electronic engine control system scanned/tested for fault codes? The system will need to be scanned to obtain the fault codes, this test and the codes it delivers is the key to finding out what the problem may be that is causing the engine to stall out at times. The fault code test can be done free of charge by any Autozone auto parts store, Aamco transmission or Kragen/Oriley auto parts store. Ask for a "OBD2" (on board diagnostics generation 2) fault code test.

This battery is 1year old after jump start wii not hold charge

Take the battery into your local auto parts chain. They will perform a charging test on the battery.

Some batteries will go bad in less then a year in which case if it is under warrant you can get it replaced for free.

If the battery tests good then you have a charging problem which usually means a faulty alternator. If you can get your car to the auto parts store they can also test the charging system on your car and should do both the battery and charging system tests for free.

Battery light on new battery still light on

Sounds like either a charging system problem or a wiring problem. On alternators, when one of the diodes shorts, it will cause the light to come on. Pull the alternator and have it tested at an auto parts store such as NAPA or AutoZone.

Post the results of the testing.

I have a new alternator, new battery but will not charge . dash gauge shows low charge.

To verify if gauge is accurate, take to local autozone (or any good parts store) and have them do FREE charging system test and to load test your battery - both are free services.

Battery light stays on

The battery light indicates a problem with the charging system.

A quick test would be to disconnect the battery while the car it running, if it's not charging the car will shutoff.

TIP: most major auto parts stores offer free charging system testing.

Hope this helps.

My car just clicks when I try to start it but it doesn't start. It will jumpstart but once I turn it off it want restart

Hi!!
The clicking sound is a sign of a drained battery. Check your battery cables for loose or corroded terminals, if everything OK, jump start the vehicle and take it to an AutoZone, Checkers or similar auto parts store to have your Starting/Charging System checked. They perform this test free of charge.
Good Luck!! Don't forget to rate this post!!
