Question about 1990 Chevrolet K2500

2 Answers

I have a 1990 Chevy K2500 5.7 and 4wd. I changed the motor in it to a 1992 5.7 and sometimes it runs fine and sometimes it loads the motor with fuel so bad that the only way to keep it running is to push the accelerator to the floor until it clears up. It sometimes takes as long as 5 minutes for this to happen. Doesn't do it all the time. Sometimes it runs beautiful. Help!

I changed the O2 sensor out of the original motor into the 92 motor. There are no wires caught between the block and bellhousing.

Check the battery to make sure the truck is on. Then check the gas sensor fuse to see if it is working. Check the fan to make sure vehicle is getting air. Then make sure your ignition switch is in the on ( not off ) position.

I would check the O2 sensor wires and anything that may have got between the block and transmission, when you put the motor in. Also, you may have a sticking fuel pressure regulator. Also check all your connections to the sensors on the motor. Any check engine light on?

Was all the ground cables connected back to engine? There are usually ground straps that are attached to the back of the block, that supply the ground for the O2 sensor. Also, I would check the fuel pressure, and see how the pressure is when the problem starts.

You need to check the fuel pump pressure and I would change the fuel filter in the process. Sounds like you may have a bad fuel pump.

When was the last time you changed the air filter ?? Do you pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner once a month into the fuel tank ?? Clogged dirty fuel injectors will give the symptoms you describe.

You need to do all the basic tune-up things: plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel and air filter.

Try this. Remove the breather, Carefully tip 1/2 a cup of gas in the intake. Replace the breather quickly. Fire it up. My quess is that it will run fine. The fuel pump is the prob! You will need to lower the fuel tank to change the fuel pump.

What fuse did they change? Are you sure it wasn't a relay or sensor they changed? You need to check the computer codes and test the fuel pressure. It wouldn't be a clogged catalytic converter if it happens only occasionally but could be a bad O2 sensor, fuel pump or filter, fuel pressure regulator, VSS (vehicle speed sensor), dirty throttle body or bad IAC motor, throttle position sensor, MAF sensor. See there's lots of things to check that's why you need to check the codes and fuel pressure first.

Try changing the fuel filter, water trapped in it can freeze. Its a 92 and probably time for a fuel pump. They don't like water either.(Meythonol Fuel) Always change fuel filter when adding antifreeze to fuel
