2000 Mazda Protege water pump pulley is wobbling. What is the procedure to replace just the pulley? Is this symptomatic of a more serious problem, or do pulleys themselves occasionally require replac

The problem is more likely the impeller on the back of the pump. They have a tendency to wear the bearing in the pump, which is on the shaft that the pulley connects to. If the vehicle is run/driven with this issue the impeller can actually cut into the water pump housing or engine block and create major repair costs. Replace water pump and inspect impeller area in housing/engine block for damage. If no damage is found then you should be able to get by with just the water pump replacement.

Serpatine belt comes off buick park ave. when driving through standing water

My bet is that one of the pulleys is misaligned. Could possibly be on the belt tensioner. Have you tried a new belt tensioner?

Also make sure the other pulleys do not have ANY play in them. Take the belt off and by hand check to see if you can wobble any of the pulleys.

If the shaft of any pulley is not perfectly aligned with the other pulleys, that pulley could cause the belt to slip off. Has the alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor been worked on or removed just prior to this happening? One of those might not have been reinstalled perfectly. A washer that is missing or in the wrong place can cause a belt to drift.

Possible water pump. Remove the belt and grab the pulley , wiggle and spin. Check the other pulleys as well.

The tension belt keeps coming off of my 1999 Town and Country. First the power steering fluid starts to leak, then it overheats. Now the battery is dead. I have already repaired the tension belt before...

Hi,
I assume you mean you have replaced the serpentine drive belt before? When your belt comes off, it is not operating your water pump and alternator or power steering pump, giving you the overheat and dead battery. Shouldnt make power steering fluid leak though. Does the power steering fluid leak all the time, or just when the belt comes off? If it leaks all the time from the pump area, you could have a bad seal and bearing in the pump causing the pulley to wobble and that makes the belt walk off. First, locate the belt routing diagram on the engine cowl (front of vehicle under the hood) or make a drawing of how the belt is routed for re-assembly use. Loosen belt tension at tensioner and take belt loose from a pulley that is easily accessed. Use your hands to wiggle all your pulleys and feel for excessive play in any of them or the components themselves. (water pump, power steering pump,A/C compressor and alternator.) If component play, you could have loose bolts causing wobble. If pulley play, could be bad bearing in component which would need replaced. Pay special attention to excess movement in the tensioner pulley itself. Also visually check for sideways alignment of pulleys. If pulleys are not aligned correctly, it will make the belt walk off also. That is usually a bracket misaligned or bolt holes in bracket worn out. If all checks good, I would suspect a worn out belt or belt tensioner that is not holding enough / proper tesion on belt allowing it to walk off. It will take you about an hour to check these things, repair costs depend on what you discover as a potential problem,as components can be costly.
Let us know what you find......Thanks, Mike

Grating noise from engine compartment then belt thrown off. Is this the water pump?

I would check a few things before saying its the water pump.I would check the idler pulley and the belt tension er and all the other pulleys on the alternator and power steering pump to see if they wobble or grind because of worn bushings or bearings. Then while you have the belt off free spin the water pump and listen for any noises and wiggle the shaft to check for any movement. If it wobbles and scrapes it would have to be replaced.

Engine is running hot

Check coolant reservoir level, check cooling fan if working, check if no leaks on the water pump...If engine newly installed, chances are drive belts are not installed properly.

Check all of the accessories that run off the belt. some may have loose or bent pulleys or the acessory itself may have come loose. Be careful to route the belt exactly as shown too. Tighten up or replace your wobbly pulleys.

You lost coolant and the water pump pulley is "wobbly". You'll need to replace the water pump because the same thing is going to happen when you replace the belt and *** coolant.
