Distributer rotor arm does not spin when the engine is cranked

The distributer rotor arm does not spin when the engine is kicked over,is the problem a broken camshaft,as the rotor spins properly with it removed from the engine?

Broken timing chain/belt will do the same thing.

54 Chevy 235 runns but no power and overheats.Should I have pointed rotor toward spark plug not distributor cap #1.My e-mail is jmincey23@sbcglobal.net


timing is way to slow. are points gap set properly. I think they are set at .016 for used points.
Fireing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4
with timing mark set at top dead center .i think it is a ball on back of engine. distributer rotor should be at #! .

I cranked the motor over a few times to get to the ignition module, I then pulled the distributer out without marking anything. Now I have motor at TDC, line on crank pulley lined up with notch on motor...


If you have it at #1 on the crank marks, you need to install the distributor so that #1 on the cap lines up with the rotor. I think you have a 350, so #1 is at about 12 o'clock if you view it from the front of the car-see diagram:mikemt_1.jpg

Driving down the highway and car died. Have gas yes. Spark? Do you think timing belt or chain broke? How do I find out?


To check timing belt or chain, remove distributer cap and turn engine over. BRING TO TOP DEAD CENTER AND SEE WHERE THE ROTOR IS POINTING, #1 cylinder? IF NOT SPEND ENGINE ONE TURN, pointing at #1? If not then you may have jumped time. Take a scoket that fits the crank and turn the engine by hand. The rotor should start turning right away, the mor you move the engine without movement of the rotor shows slack in chain or belt.
Another possiblity is that you might have a crank sensor gone bad. Check for fire at the spark plugs. Take one out and, while the plug is laid on the engine, spin the engine, it should it should spark. Either way shows that the engine is not firing. Next is to do a compression check, ther should not be more than 10% difference between the cylinder. If no compression, you have an interfearance engine and jumping timing will bend the valve. Hope this helps.

#1 on cap : turn engine by hand 'till timing mark on crank pulley is aligned with 0 (tdc) on scale. Remove cap. The rotor will be either pointing to the firewall or towards the front of the engine. If towards firewall turn one more time. Where it is pointing is #1. Worked on too many marine engines to remember for sure (think it turns clockwise) but just crank it once and watch which way the rotor turns. order is 18436572.

the old fashioned way to check this is to remove your distribution cap and watch the position of your rotor arm to see which position it is for cylindar 1. then take out the spark plug for cylider one and use a light to see inside you should be able to see the piston move up and down throgh the hole, now the piston only goes down twice in one cycle so by cranking the engine round by hand you can correspond where the piton just starts to go down is the point of ignition so the rotor arm should be at the same point lined up with the spark lead for cylinder one inside the cap. if it mile off then cylinder 1 is at the top of the induction stroke, so crank round again until the piston starts to go down again. then you have the distributor arm at the right position, then follow round the cap the firing order for your engine. and then wire up the cap the same way.

Hi i have a spark from coil to distributer cap but cant get spark at any of my plugs changed all plugs and cap and rotary arm even tried crank sensor but still wont start?any ideas w reg 1.8 petrol


take cap off have someone crank and see if rotor is turning if it is not check to see if rotor is stripped or if shaft is not turning pull distributor out of block and check cam gear

Set your engine to TDC. Now your rotor arm should be pointing to the No1 cylinder. Your firing order should be 1-3-4-2. Get someone to spin the engine for you so you can see which way the rotor arm moves and put the leads on in the order of rotation. Starting at the rotor set at TDC, put that lead on the plug in No1 cylinder. The next one should go on No3 plug then 4 then 2.
