Question about 2005 Subaru Impreza
Hi there i have fitted a new alternator in my impreza as the battery wasnt charging but this alternator has made no difference (still only getting 12.2v) but what i noticed is that when the cooling fan or headlights are on, the alternator seems to start charging as the battery voltage then goes up to 13.8v. what can this be????
When you turn on the lights or fan there is a draw on the system causing the alternator to kick in, therefore the higher voltage. Probably without them on and your battery is charged, the current would be less or none and you may just be measuring the battery voltage. If you discharge the battery the charging voltage will probably go up because then it will be in a charging state. So your new alternator is probably OK.
You can test it by driving --if the battery becomes discharged, then the alternator is not working
