Hello... The symptoms are normally a squeaky noise from it. You can find out by spraying some water on it. If the noise stops, that is your problem.

Good Luck....

Jeep Grand Cherokee with new belt and still squeaks.

The pulley you describe sounds like the idle pulley and it should be straight and if you remove the belt and turn the pulley it should roll free and not bind. In short I would change the pulley as it has a bad bearing in it.

My bottom pulley squeals real bad i dressed the belts and they stopped for a lil bit, the belt is snug. is there anything i can do to quiet the pulley on the bottom of the motor?this is a 97 jeep grand...

Is it possible that the belt tensioner is the cause for the squeal or possibly the belt itself needs to be replaced. Although not impossible, the lower pulley usually is not the cause for belt squeal, unless it is damaged.

Noise from serpentine belt pulleys 2007 jeep grand cherokee 3.0lt diesel engine

if it is a squeak it is the belt if it is a growl it could be a pulley going bad you can better determine if it is a belt or pulley buy taking the belt off and spining the pulleys by hand to see if one has any play or noise if not relpace belt

If you need more details about youe Jeep ZJ Grand Cherokee, can check this documents about Repair Manual: Grand Cherokee 1993-1998 FSM

To get out, it's easy and doesn't require a prybar.
  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done

What are the symptoms of a bad drive belt pulley? 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

noise mostly. If it gets bad enough the idler pulley can seize. when that happens it will smoke the belt off into shreds and smoke and glory. It will be very exciting for everyone but you.
If you can pull the belt off you can spin those pulleys and see if any of them sound rough. If they wobble at all or make any noise you can hear with no trouble then they are bad.

Drive belt came off pulley loose on 2007 jeep grand laredo

The center pully is the IDLER PULLEY.
It is also referred to as the TENSIONER.

It has a coiled spring that creates the belt tension. Replace it ($15) (and the belt) ($8).

Hope this helps!

2000 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 liter engine timing belt replacement

If you have the same pulley arrangement that most 4.0 engines have that pulley is an idler not a tensioner. Your power steering pump has a pivot bolt, and a slide under the pump. You adjust belt tension using the pump.

Timing belt and pulley

1.Your engine has an internal timing chain, not a belt.
Therefore I'm going to assume that you mean the serpentine drive belt.
Common causes for belt to fail is either a mis-aligned or damaged pulley, improper belt tension, or bad tensioner spring (if equipped with spring loaded tensioner) You mentioned a loose pulley but didn't say which one! That's what I'd look at first! Also, make sure that all pulleys have no "wobble" indicating a bad pulley bearing Most common: water pump or idler pulley.
