Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

1996 Jeep grand cherokee wont start im not getting spark from the coil and it has no power at the injectors every thing is pointing to the auto shutdown relay but i replaced it and still nothing the relay is getting power and ground if it is the power train control mod can it be tested or repaired or did i not check everything. I would go for a short drive about a mile i would turn it off and it wouldn't start but if i waited a couple of hours it would start again it did it a couple of times. i hooked up a obd reader it said it had multiple cylinder misfire so i changed the cap and roter about 2 miles later it stalled and wont start

PCM won't send a signal to the ASD unless it sees a signal from the crank position sensor. Cheked that?

I would make sure you have voltage to the coil. Could be a fuse or relay problem. Is the check engine light on when you turn the key on ?

96 grand cherakee will not start has fuel psi don't seem to have spark at coil. Where is the the diasnotic connector

DLC is located on the driverside, left, under the steering column. You say is "seems" you do not have spark, is there spark? You have fuel pressure, but is there power to the injectors?

I would be thinking that there is a good chance that you need to be checking out replacing the computer, if you aren't getting any communication with the proper scan tool then the computer isn't communicating with anything in the vehicle...... I would have guessed first off that the ignition control module might be bad but that is obviously part of the computer also, I would be looking in that direction.

No spark and no gas now what

Hi,

If you have no spark and no fuel pump operation,I would strongly suspect the Auto Shut Down relay.
The Auto Shut Down (ASD) Relay supplies power to the ignition coil, fuel injector, electric fuel pump, and the oxygen sensor heater element as long as the key is in the START or RUN position and the Single Module Engine Controller (SMEC) is receiving a reference signal from the distributor.
If the SMEC receives no distributor reference signal for two seconds or more the SMEC interrupts power to the ignition coil, fuel injectors, electric fuel pump, and the oxygen sensor heater element by removing the ASD relay ground.

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

1996 jeep grand chrokee turns over will not start, replaced cam shaft censor and ECM, and coil. distibuter cap looks bad has some white dust inside and contacts burnt. could it be that?

If you did not replace the CRANK sensor on the back side of the motor this most likely is the problem and a very common one at that.this controls spark and injector pulse, unlike the cam sensor which just shows when #1 cilyder is up.

Try resetting the asd "auto shut down fuse had a similar problem the jeep would crank but did not get spark or gas also check your fuel pump? and the asd relay may be bad it will prevent the jeep from getting no spark and will not fire some jeeps have security problems

1993 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO IM TOTALLY BAFFLED

Back up a minute...Do you have spark from the coil wire? (juice from coil) If so, change or check rotor and cap (wires do not all go bad at same time so unless they are wet, likely at least good enough to start engine)
