The thermastat is located if your looking at the engine just below the exhaust manifold and altinator

two 10 mm bolts hold it in place i believe 10 mm might be 9 mm

make sure you dont damage the rubber gasket or buy a new one

Where is the thermostat on a 98 chevy cavalier

In order to find the thermostat all you have to do is follow your top radiator hose. When you find the spot where the hose meets the block that is where your thermostat is going to be. You will need to remove to bolts to get to the thermostat. Hope this helps you out.

I do not know where the '98 Cavalier 2.2 L engine thermostat is

Open the hood and trace the upper radiator rubber hose to where it ends. That is where you should find the thermostat. If it is not there, it is apparent that the previous owner could have removed it for some reasons.
Notice how the thermostat was previously installed, and use that as a guide when you replace it back.

My temperature gauge will go half way then drop

First thing you need to do obviously, is check your coolant level. If coolant level has been checked and all is well, then I'd look at replacing the thermostat.

2001 chevy caviler is over heating

To locate the thermostat follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine it will be at the end of the hose. Also if you have an electric secondary fan make sure the sensor that controls it is working or the engine will over heat.
