SOURCE: oil capacity

To the best of my knowledge the capacity is 6qts with filter change. But...I would use 5qts, start it up and circulate oil, then add additional qt if needed. A tip on oil filters...wipe some oil on gasket to keep it from adhering to filter pad when installing. Also, if position installed allows, pre fill filter with oil before starting...dosen't have to be really full, but any oil in there is less air that hast to be expelled before oil reaches crankshaft.

SOURCE: oil leak in my 92 jeep cherokee

The most likely place for an engine to start leaking oil (when it's coming from the top and not the bottom) is around the valve covers -- the gasket goes bad. Next most likely is camshaft seals.

Sometimes just tightening the valve cover botls will stop it or at least reduce it.

SOURCE: engine oil comes out valve cover breather filter

Sounds like blow-by if I understand correctly. Do a compression test to see where you stand with your engine.

SOURCE: oil gauge fluctuates back and forth. sometimes

You'll need to determine if the oil pressure is actually changing, or if the sending unit or gauge is lying to you. Be certain the oil level is up to normal, then check the actual oil pressure with a test gauge. If the pressure varies (drops) at engine idle, perhaps your pressure bypass is defective, or perhaps the oil pump is worn. Testing with a known good pressure gauge should lead you in the right direction.

SOURCE: 1984 Jeep CJ7 heater core leaking

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
  2. Disconnect heater core hoses.
  3. Disconnect damper door control cables.
  4. Disconnect blower motor electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect water drain hose and defroster hose.
  6. Remove nuts retaining heater housing assembly to instrument panel. Remove heater housing assembly by tilting heater downward to disengage it from air inlet duct and pulling toward rear of vehicle.
  7. Remove heater core from heater housing.
  8. Reverse procedure to install.

What kind of oil goes in the transfer case

It depends on your transfer case

spicer 18 and 20 takes 80W-90 gear oil
dana 300 takes 85W-90 gear oil.

I personally don't think it would matter either way if you put 85 or 80. They both lube well. Thats my opinion.

What kind of oli do i use in an 1985 cj7

If your engine is in relatively good condition, I recommend using any good quality name brand 20w 40 oil. You may also benefit from an additive such as lucas. Only one aside from marvel oil I'd ever use. Never does damage and always helps.

I have a 1985 jeep cj7 and it will idle just fine

If you haven't had any luck yet, I suggest that you #1 replace any rubber fuel lines that are obviously bad or even questionable. CJ's had mechanical fuel pumps mounted on the side of the crank case which ran off the cam. This means that there is no pump in the tank and any fuel lines leading to that pump will be under a vacuum. If those rubber lines are wrong kind, old or almost kinked they WILL colapse under the vacuum and temporarily shut the fuel off. #2 However, in your case it sounds like the little screen filter on the pull tube inside the tank is probably stopped up completely with debre, that's why the motor dies and won't start again. If you drop the tank and remove the screen sock from the end of the metal tube that may solve one problem. If you do this though, I suggest that you put an inline filter somewhere before the pump.

have you ran a compression check yet? check and make sure there's no water in your oil also. Sometimes a warped head will react this way, has the vehicle ran hot recently? Lastly make sure your catalytic convertor isnt restricted in any way.
