These have a problem in the brake light switch. Very common. replace the brake light switch under the dash, just above the pedal. Let me know if you need instructions.

By coincidence, it is possible both bulbs went out at once.
It is also possible the fuse went, so check for power at the master cylinder switch.
The switch could also have gone bad.

When I turn my lights on my tail lights work but when I hit my brakes the don't light up I have a 2001 vw beetle????

the brake lights don't light up or the taillights don't light up? the brake lights are brighter than the tailights so the tailights won't show up whenbrakes are applied. if no lights work when brakes are applied then check for a bad ground at the light assembly.

The brake light bulbs on my 2003 beetle 1.9tdi are fine but wont come on when the pedal is pressed. If i remove the offside bulb and put it back, it comes on until the ignition is turned over then goes out...

There's a brake light switch down on the top of your brake pedal. This switch actuates when you step on the pedal. If it goes bad you have brake lights all the time, or not at all.

Here's some instructions and photos (the instructions may be ridiculously offensive to some)

If it's not the bulbs and not the fuses why would i have no break lights

the switch that sends power to the brake lights behind the foot pedal is bad in your car. replace the switch and you should be good to go.

2003 VW BEETLE LEFT BRAKE LIGHT DOES NOT WORK WHEN LIGHTS ARE ON, TAIL LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT GOES OUT WHEN BRAKE APPLIED

These cars were very well known to have bad grounds at the tail lamps. I would check the grounds to be sure they are still viable and check the wires to the tail lamps to be sure they haven't corroded.

Changing Brakes concern

Most brake pads have what they call squeak indicators. These indicators will start squeaking when your not applying the brakes when the pads get low.Otherwise the best way is to inspect the pads and see how much is left.

Brake light is off

There's a recall on your issue. Take it to the dealership.
You likely have a defective brake light switch.

NEWS: Volkswagen recalls nearly 800,000 cars
Defective brake lights on Golf, GTI, Jetta, New Beetle and R32 are a potential safety hazard and should be replaced. February 26, 2007 - NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Around 800,000 Volkswagen vehicles have been recalled Monday because of faulty brake lights, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
The 790,000 vehicles include Jettas, New Beetles, Golfs, GTIs and R32s...all in the United States.
The specific years and models affected are:
  • 1999-2005 Jetta sedans
  • 2001-2005 Jetta wagons
  • 1998-2007 New Beetle
  • 2003-2007 New Beetle Convertibles
  • 1999-2006 Golfs and GTIs
  • 2004 R32
The malfunctioning brake lights and brake light switches could fail to come on or remain stuck on.
This recall expands on one announced by Europe's No. 1 carmaker last year, when 362,000 Jettas and New Beetles were recalled due to the same defective part.

Volkswagen said that dealers will immediately be prepared to accept service appointments to perform the repair at no charge, but the notification process isn't scheduled to begin until April.

NHTSA did not say if any injuries had been reported linked to the defective brake lights.
